So umm...I always understood that 6th gen ex's came with d16y8 with vtec engaging at about 5200 rpm's. I just checked the stamp on my block and it said d16y5. I looked it up and found out it came on the 96 ex and 96-00 hx. Supposedly it has vtec-e (which I know nothing about) however I have a y8 intake manifold. What is this supposed to mean for me? When does vtec kick in? What are the biggest differences in y5 and y8?

Thanx for anything that can help me out...

Vtec engagement is the same between the two. The EX with the y8 is tuned to make power after vtec. The DX with the y5 is tuned more for gas mileage and efficiency. The fuel maps are different from the factory

so what exactly is vtec-e? and what's the physical difference in the heads? other than fuel economy, is it basically the same thing or is the y5 a POS?

vtec-e engages at 3,000 rpm i think. the camshaft has a few extra lobes on it, that are bigger, which also makes the rocker arms different too.

im interested how much power the stock y5 cylinder heads can hold.

Y5 is a great engine if your looking for gas mileage not really for performance though... but heyy who needs to go fast anyway? :D

IDK how much power but when I get my car on the road i'll be sure to find out and let you know...would it be worth it to swap a y8 head on it? When I bought the car, that's what I thought the car came with coz I didn't know the 96 ex's were different...

so if it is worth it, is it just plug and play? I know the intake mani is the same unless I already have a y8 mani on my car that's not stock...

Thanx

Someone swapped the engine out thats not the original engine.

And 3K engagement doesnt mean more performance... VTEC-E go to wikipedia and look it up dude... I would give link but I g2g sorry

no, I looked it up and it IS the stock motor. The 96 ex's came with the d16y5 while the 97-00 came with the y8 head.

Better gas milage.... or just a simple swap for someone not looking to go fast.... like a lot of people do

the y5 is out of an hx. the "e" in vtec-e stands for economy.

the engine is not stock in your car, ex's came with y8's.

Things are starting to clear up now, thanx.....

So, if I wanted a y8 head back on it, i'd have to change the ecu as well, right? and if I did put the y8 head on it, it'd be the equivalent to stock right? I mean, that's the only difference between the two motors, just the heads right?

alot of people do a mini me swap. which they just swap the cylinder head out. alot of people keep the block because its basically the same thing.

yes you'd have to change the ecu because the y5's ecu is made for vtec-e and not regular vtec

and if you're ever going to turbo it. good luck. im not sure how much power you would be able to push because im pretty sure they dont make aftermarket cams for the y5. that would probably be the first thing to blow under boost.

thanx...I'm looking for it to be my dd in the meantime so i probably won't do much to the motor yet...besides, i'll appreciate the better gas mileage for now so maybe it works in my best interest to just keep the motor as is...It runs well so I guess that's all i'm worried about for now...

I appreciate the advice guys

i have the same questions as you Nicoyita1
we have an ej8 here, its an 96 ex,with an d16y5 engine. i know, the oem y8,b16a2 and d16y5 intake systems are the same. we have a lot of ek3 civics here, those are all d15 vtec e and has the same airbox system.
like the one guy here said,we think they swapped the engine, cause they only want a new motor or whatever, and its the best for the mostly people if its efficiency as the old one.
