it was fun playing with you guys last night. we just got LBP monday night, which is why we sucked so horribly lol.Yeah, we got a new one for xmas and it is not backwards compatible with ps2 games discs or memory cards. not sure bout the downloadable games.
They did this to lower manufacturing costs. Sony is now at a $439.00 manufacturing cost for the 80g ps3. They are still losing money on every unit sold.
i think we need to get more organized. i'm gonna make a new thread solely for PSN names, so we can keep this thread open for discussions. That way we can all connect on sony@home as well. we got a clubhouse set up, but no furniture yet... not til sony gives us a way to make money or build credits virtually. i really dislike spending real money on virtual items.

so, has anyone installed any flavor of linux on their ps3 yet? i'm thinking about installing ubuntu on the ps3 this weekend. seems pretty straightforward... too bad i won't be able to read anything due to our sdtv.
so what are people using to watch mkv vids on their ps3? i have had semi-luck with mkv2vob, and i've tried ps3 media server which worked well in the sense that it played a bunch of different file types(all my mkv's and mp4's), but my wireless was too slow and it lagged too much. ive heard that tversity is good, but im worried ill have the same issues (lagging)... anyone else playin some mkv's?

right now i'm looking at DNLA media servers to see what supports on-the-fly transcoding... a lot of ppl recommend TVersity, but also state it has issues with 64-bit OSs.
i don't plan to fiddle with the PS3 like that.
i was thinking about linux on my ps3 but then recently my bro tried sending his ps3 in for repair and they didnt accept it they said bring it to best buy and they was just going to give him the 80gb but he doesnt lke it cause he cant play the ps2 and ps1 games so he called sony and they charged him 150 for fixing it. fail

it's going to be basically unusable, or atleast unreadable, it may fry your ps3, or just stop it from playing ps3 games, and it could void your warranty.....
with all of those awesome side effects.....
why are you doing this?
i dont even like my ps3, but i still wouldnt do this.
i have too much invested to chance ruining a $400 system for a superfluous "nifty" factor

The geek factor, I guess. I haven't heard of any issues with linux on ps3 asside from the one mentioned in this thread. Sony endorses the installation of linux on the ps3 AND the ps2... Remember the linux kit for ps2? Personally I don't see how there would be an issue since it was Sony's vision that the ps3 could double as a full-fledged computer as well. I will definitely do more research on potential issues, including calling Sony about it. It would be nice to have a 4th computer in the apartment...
