Oh f**k. North Korea just attacked South Korea

(Reuters) - North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting a return fire by the South, Seoul's military and media reports said.

Seoul's YTN television quoted a witness as saying 60 to 70 houses were on fire after the shelling.

The military confirmed the exchange of firing, without providing more details.

Almost never. There has been very great tension between the two since the end of the Korean War, but direct action very rarely happens.

not just that, but there are thousands of US troops stationed in South Korea. This could get bad really really fast if the use of Nuclear and or biological/chemical weapons come into play.

s. korea isnt just going to sit back and do nothing...obviously there is going to be more of this exchanging of attacks and what not will lead to more and more and more...until the U.N. comes in and tells N. Korea to stop...they wont of course and here we go again...

This saddens me. I'm South Korean. North are crazy bastards.

Military training is mandatory in South Korea for all males from what I hear. You can't get out of it. You go to jail if you don't go. I think it starts at 18 or 21. So it looks like if they need soldiers, pretty much every male qualified to serve the army is ready to go.

I'm just relieved they used shells. It's going to get bad if they start to use nuclear power. Real bad, real fast. I have family in South Korea too and my grandma who lives here is visiting there now until early December. I hope this doesn't escalate.

i was stationed twice in south korea and since have been keeping an eye on the news when things come up. the 2 times i was there they had a naval scurmish but nothing this serious. its very scary. i recall the first day in korea we werre briefed that we are just a speed bump to slow the north down while reenforcements arrived. i think that in order to keep the north in check we will have to go to war. many lives will be lost but a nuclear north korea doesnt make the world safer. they cause alot of instability in that region and they need to be taken care of.

Along with the slain marines, 15 South Korean soldiers and three civilians were wounded when the North fired about 100 rounds of artillery at Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, South Korea authorities said. The attack also set houses and forests on fire on the island.
