Damn that is a sweet looking card lol.

I'll have to dig into my savings which is one thing I'm trying to start doing as a new years resolution. But I'm just so sick of all these damn small problems here and there....

And I was hoping you'd say an OS because this OS must be corrupted or something . I'll find a way to squeeze in another $100 somehow. Thanks man.

I just looked inside my case, and the GTX 460 won't work. I have a 5.1 surround sound card that will be in the way. The friggin thing is nearly 5 inches thick? Holy...s**t. My current Radeon 4850 barely has enough room. It pushes on my SATA plugs for my hard drives and CD-ROM. Which more than likely means I have to get a new mobo too that is configured differently so everything can fit without being in each others way.

I think I'll just stick with a new CPU and OS. The graphics card really isn't all that bad... Especially for WoW? I think a new CPU and OS will do me just fine. If all else fails, I can just upgrade the mobo later.

Your going to be disappointed with just a CPU and OS.

Actually, I read the dimensions wrong on the GTX 460. It said something like 9" x 4.75". I misinterpreted that as the height. It doesn't give an actual height dimension. I'll have to look into that.

I was considering getting a new mobo, CPU, and that GTX 460... But then on top of a new OS and a new 1TB internal HDD I'd use as my main (that will have Windows 7), that's going to be close to $600. I need a new HDD because I'm running out of room on mine and the Vista HDD is only 160GB.

I'll most likely need the new mobo to fit the GTX 460. I have 5.1 speakers and the mobo doesn't have 5.1 ports built in so I'm not going to take out the card and just plug in the fronts and call it a day. That's just a waste of money to not use all 6 speakers IMO.

And I just tried starting my computer on bare necessities. It wouldn't start with just PSU, mobo, CPU, 1 memory stick (closest to CPU). The computer made of series of VERY short and fast beeps, a couple of them, no pauses, they were just very short and fast. So I tried hooking up my HDD. Same thing. So I hooked up my CD-ROM. Same thing. So I hooked up my XP HDD. Same thing. So I hooked up my PCI-E graphics card and it started but then I got NTLDR error. So I hooked up my vista HDD and I still got NTLDR. So I put in my mobo CD and it finally made it to windows. It still made the 1 short, 1 long beep at me during the windows loading screen. I tried switching RAM around, no dice. Oh and my mobo is rev 1.0.

Another thing that REALLY pisses me off is when I go to plug in something in the USB ports on the front of the case, my computer will restart. I have checked every wire inside and out and I can't find any short or something. I took off the front cover and looked at the wires. Everything looks fine. I don't understand why the f**king computer restarts. I don't even have to plug something in. If I just touch the tip of the USB plug to the plate on the front, computer restarts. I f**king hate computers. Even for small dumb reasons. f**king hate them.

Sounds like a screwy motherboard to me.

So I'm probably better off getting a new rig huh?

What about this setup?

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871
What's the difference between a $160 125W quad core and the 95W quad core I posted above?

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402

And that GTX 460 you posted. I think I'd probably use the same case and I have a 700W PSU. I just broke a case fan today so I'd probably buy a couple newer and higher CFM fans to up the cooling a little. Problem is, with those 3 + OS + 2 x 2GB memory sticks, it comes to $625 with standard shipping. WAY the hell expensive...

Nice. And no wonder why my shopping cart was so high... I had 2 mobo's in there lol.

1TB HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

Asus 790X mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402

G.Skill 2 x 2GB ram sticks:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0 GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad Core:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871

Aaannnddd Windows 7. Total comes to $438.95. Ouch... Practically a brand new computer. This'll be most of my savings :(. Sick of this computer s**t though. The beeping, restarting, damn errors, etc. I'd imagine I can sell off a few things though for some money.

Now is there a way I can make sure the mobo will work in my current case? And what's the difference between a $160 125W quad core and the $100 95W quad core I posted above? Is it just speed difference? I mean either way, I'd imagine both will be faster than what I have now but I'm just curious.

Compared to the systems I build, $438 only covers part the cpu

What case do you have? 98% of the cases on the market will accept ATX. I'd be worried if it was an XL-ATX.

The difference is in the wattage, speed, and what volts the CPU operates at. A few years ago, it was a bigger issue as some boards didn't work with the higher wattages, and others did. It was more confusing as you could have two identical CPUs, the only difference would be one was a higher wattage.

AMD was known for that and was a bigger bug than you'd expect.

For example:
ADA9000CYBOX
ADO9000CYBOX

The only difference is the ADA and ADO, but to some, that made the difference between a CPU working on a motherboard and not working correctly.

Haha. I guess it's a decent build. If my graphics gives me s**t even after this, I'm gonna have a fit. I'll have to talk to my friend to see if/when he's available to help me put it together. I leave that s**t to him. I don't wanna f**k things up.

I saw someone say "buy a mac!!!".

Don't. I've had major fail experiences with macs and games. I used to play Runescape on my laptop.. and it sucks horribly.

Well, Macs aren't designed around gaming. Clearly, JohnS games and a Mac is out of the question. Don't think they even offer WoW for Macs, or do they?

edit; I game, I tried Steam/TF2 on my Mac, its playable. But, I eventually decided to buy a tower and upgrade it all and dual booting it.

Games work on macs if nothing else is available.

I plan on buying an Alienware sometime soon to get back into gaming

Ninja edit
. My case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147058

It looks like it'd work. And I really like my case. It's basic, it doesn't have the gay clear sides and all that LED crap to make it look stupid, it's got a side fan, front fan, top fan, and rear fan (all 120mm except the top because the PSU is too big), and there's a lot of room on the inside as it sits now.

That's what I've heard about Macs. Everyone I know that has one only uses it for word processing, online chatting, internet browsing, and maybe some media playing.

I'll probably get into other games eventually. I love first person shooters and MMO/RPG's. I really wanna try Diablo 3 when it comes out. That game used to be my dream back when I was hooked on D2 years ago.

Delete my post, Did not realize he was just going to start from scratch....
No need to do that. I appreciate your help. I wasn't originally on planning to start over. I thought I could fix the problems. But it seems like I'm just better off building a new setup. Technology grows so damn fast...

Blizzard always dual releases for mac/windows. If you are playing a blizzard product then it also comes with a mac version. Osx is not a platform that games get build for a majority of the time. If you are a pc gamer just stay with windows.

Might as well turn this into a computer upgrade thread or something.

I busted a case fan yesterday so I'm going to buy a couple higher CFM ones tonight. But how much "wattage" do fans use? My plan right now will put me at 5 accessory fans total. Should I be worried about maxing out my PSU or something? And how do I find out how much wattage or CFM's my current fans run?

I was planning on buying these fans.

New side to replace busted one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185054

Replace rear and front. Although I don't even know how much CFM or RPM's the fans run on the ones I have now...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185006

Now, this is the side of the case:

What is that cone thing supposed to do? I would assume to cover over the CPU to have more direct air flow to the fan to help cool it more efficiently? Well anyways, can I take that cone thing off and replace it with a fan? I don't see why it wouldn't be more efficient to just have a fan there and help push more air into the case.

I thought I would get this for that cone spot:
Newegg.com - MASSCOOL FD08025S1M4 80mm Case Fan

Input?
