saying mexican citizen isn't the same as just plain mexican. the latter implies something different. though i don't say mexican at all. hispanic is more all encompassing.

If I know someone is Mexican, is it okay to just call them Mexican? Or should I call them hispanic? Referring to them as Mexican is much more precise and is only derogatory if you have that mindset.
