Civic DX cluster to si cluster

Hey guys, I have a 98 civic DX hatch manual, the problem is I want to switch out the cluster that currently lacks a tachometer into possible a 00 si cluster that has a tach. Would this work? And how do I go about installing the wiring for the tach on the cluster itself when the one I have now doesn't have one? Thanks in advance.

2 philips screws for bezel
4 philps screws for cluster
2-4 clips from the wiring harness
Plug and play, very simple.
Same applies to any 96-00 cluster would fit, as will 97-01 CRV

First post is pretty much spot on. Don't pull too hard since the clips might pop off the bezel

Also, tach wiring is there in the harness, just plug it into the cluster. Forgot to mention that.

To explain a little more! I bought one for my 98 dx from an 00 ex m/t with a tach and when it arrived I was worried that it wouldnt work cause I didint have enough plugs. Turns out the yellow plug was an srs airbag which I have, the second was green If I remember right it was the shift up light (the plug I dont have). As for the tach, its pre wired, all you have to do is (plug and play with the 96-00) Just plug in it will work unless the cluster is bad. Not %100 sure on my side as Ive never done it, but I think the si clusters are also plug and play.

Similar concern here. I took my 98 CRV cluster and dropped it into my 99 Civic sedan (DX). There were more connectors on the CRV and I was worried. Just plugged in what could and it worked. Unless youre swapping in a 7th gen Civic, s2000, or Integra cluster, you wont need to rewire or repin anything.

wow its that easy, i thought you had to rewire everything lol. how about the odometer. Like how do I roll back or forward the miles on the cluster?

It's difficult, you'll have to really be careful and remove the tabs and manually roll it back. If I were you, i'd just take pictures of the clusters (old and new) and save it onto multiple data devices, as well as write them down and tape the numbers to the driver door (where the VIN/Info etc; are or should be)

There's four screws on the back of the cluster to drop out your odometer/speedometer do you can just swap them and bring your original one to the new cluster

This, yes, may or may not work. On CRV Clusters, the Civic speedometer won't fit snug. Why ruin a nice SI Cluster with a Civic speedometer? That's madness!

Is switching out the speedometer/odometer legal? Is switching out the cluster at all legal?

IMO as long as your not doing this to scam someone then who cares. Most people do this either to get a tach (like myself) or to get a different style cluster (SI). Now if you go look at a car for sale and it has say 215,000 and they swapped in a speedo with 60,000 and continued to tell me that the car has originally 60000 I would check the title before you finalize the purchase. If the milage is exemt I would be asking some questions and depending on the price and how it drives I may still make the purchase, even though he lied.

Example. you buy a newer car you think has 35,000 miles but salesman failed to tell you the motor has been changed and has 120,000 You leave the lot 5 years later you sale the car listed with 120,000miles anyways. (motor would be 155,000)

I guess what Im saying is a used car is a used car whether it have 5 miles or 500,000 if it was maintained whats the worry.
My uncle had a brand new f150 work truck he bought motor went before 10,000 lucky he had the warrenty

thanks gno! i found what i needed, for those who care, in NJ its legal as long as its installed by a mechanic and you must put a sticker on the driver side door pillar stating the old and new cluster's muleage. idk what thatll look like haha.

do you guys think its worth it to replace the cluster just to get a tach. itll be around 150 in the end.

keep searching I got mine off ebay for 60 free shipping its an ex m/t about 1 month ago searched for about 2 weeks before buying. If you look everyday. I wouldn't pay more than 80 with free shipping ex style with the blue thats the going price IMO The si I havent done alot of research on the si cluster pricing I just wanted a tach though but you could probably get an si cluster for 150 if you look.
