Crankshaft pulley removal.

I have an older civiv with a d15a engine. I am changing the timing belt but for the life of me I can't get the Crank pulley bolt off. I have tired an impact wrench, breaker bar. The hard part is trying to keep the engine from spinning when I attempt to turn the bolt off. I have tried putting a screw driver through the holes on the pulley but I just keep bending whatever I am trying to hold the pully still with. Also. I have n auto so I can't just put it in gear or stick a driver in the flywheel teeth.

HELP!

you should probably get some liquid wrench "penetrating oil". Spray it on , let it soak. Use a big breaker bar as well.

To keep the engine from spinning there should be a knob on the torque converter(at least thats how it works for the mustang). You can get a socket over it and have someone hold it. This will allow you to break the crank pulley bolt off without spinning the pulley.

If you still can't get it off, you might try heating the bolt a little. This tends to loosen it up and it makes it easier to pull the bolt out. I would recommend this as a LAST RESORT only as you can damage quite a few things if you overheat it.

Ya, i had some fun getting my crank pulley off as well. I probably switched between the stocker and the underdrive one about 4 or 5 times before finally deciding to stay with the underdrives.

I haven't really crawled under there, but it doesn't appear that the TC has easy access like it does on the rear wheel drive cars. Any other suggestions?

OK it's VERY dangerous so be carefull!!! take your braker bar and put it on the nut take the other end and put it on something strong, frame or ground. make sure you note the rotation next pull your plug wire (so the car will not start ) now have everyone stand back and very quickly bump the motor (just so it moves 1/4 to 1/2) if all works the nut will brake lose
and again be very carefull
any questions about this PM me

The only problem with the sedging of the prybar thing is that the engine turns in a counterclockwise rotation. This would cause the bolt to tighten(I am assuming that the nut rotates in the righty tighty leftyu loosy normal way).

I broke down and bought a 1000FPs Impact wrench instead of my 300Fps one I was trying it with. We'll see if that gets it off. If not, then "ill split the nut

If timing belt has never been done before the crank pulley is realy hard to get off...i had to use a 3/4 impact gun (the ones they use to bolt down lifts) well that was the only one that worked......g/l

yea man i had a b***h of a time with mine. eventually i borrowed a 3 foot breaker bar from a mechanic friend and jammed a ball joint separator into my bell houseing against the flywheel to stop the crank from moving. but i have a 5spd, and like u said you have an auto.....sorry to say i dont really have any ideas for you, since i dont know much of anyting about the autos. good luck tho.

if you cant get it off, you could try to take it to a shop and have them break it loose. then just tighten up just a little, and drive carefully back to your place and do it then. once the bolt is broken loose once, its a hella lot easier anytime after that.

okay... everybody stop panicking.......

all you need to do is get the timing belt off, right? then pop off your valve cover and remove your camshaft.......... if that is too complicated for you, then just unbolt the cam gear while the shaft is still bolted to the motor........ essentially, remove tension from the top end of the belt instead of the bottom.......... there is no need to loosen or remove your crankshaft pulley

Team4R, dont you have to take off the bolt to remove the lower TB cover? and you have to remove the lower TB cover to do the rest of the installation...i could be wrong, but i just wanted to check. i honestly cant remember what i had to do when i did mine...even tho it was only a month or so ago.

i do believe all the covers need to be removed.... if not, removing them will at least make the install infinitely easier.

Alright! The big ass impact wrench worked like butta. I got the pulley off(which is the inly way to get the lower timimg belt cover off) and found out the reason the belt was all jacked. The water pump pulley bearing had exploded. When the belt/pulley exploded it jammed between the cover and the crank T-belt pulley stopping the engine. This was the only thing that kept the valves out of harms way. I'll replace the pump and the belt, fluch out the cooling system, line everything up and see if she will run again. I should have all this done before the start of MFN...Go BRONCOS! I'll let you know how it turns out.
