Heres the Fiesta RallyX project car. this is a project between me and my roomate, we have always wanted to have a project car, and were looking around for a while trying to get an 88-91 hatch, when this turned up. On craigslist a guy was selling a 78 fiesta, asking $125 for it. it had a dead battery, bad tires, nice rims, 1.6 liter carbed motor, 4 speed manual tranny, missing one front tiny triangle window, and the brakes dont work. the engine runs, the tranny works pretty well, clutch is ok, the fan doesnt work, and it overheats if you just idle for a few minutes. the headlights did shine bright, not even yellowed at all, (the left one didnt work at first and the guy smacked it and then it worked, all the guages except the temp guage worked, and it had swapped out the original gauges with the higher model gauges with the tach. after washing it the headlights and gauges dont work (guages could have been something else) The "$50 paint job" is being applied onto the car in the lovely color of gloss black. anyways the guy just wanted it gone, so he was willing to take $50 cash. It also didnt have the fan belt for the water pump, so after turning it on and getting it running for a few min, we had to turn it off go to the autoparts store, get the belt and go back (all at like 9:00 pm and dark. i test drove it, handed him $50 cash and drove home 8 miles with no brakes. it either has air in the lines or needs a new master cylinder. When braking you must pump it hard and fast two or three times, then you will have pressure for about a second, then do it again. so luckily the ebrake works, but it only goes to one of the back tires, so it locks up pretty easy. So with pumping the brakes, and using the ebrake and downshifting, I was able to make it 8 miles through town back home. I also had my roommate in his truck ahead of me (older truck kinda beat up) incase i needed some extra stopping power before an intersection. Luckily never had to use that method.
So here is the tally on the car and its future plans as a super cheap project/rallyX car. (Ohh for you guys that dont know, rallycross is just Autocross on the dirt, and my civic will continued to be abused on the autox, but never giong off road
78 Ford Fiesta $50
black paint $50
tires $100 getting a set of stock 13" steelies from a civic and using the tires on our rims
brake fluid $4
oil+filter $13
coolant $8
oil, temp, volt gauge combo (ebay new) $13
gutting stripping free
painting inside black (incuded in original paint costs)
possibly lowering a small amount on cut springs free
Alarm Free (me and my roommate own a small car audio business) extra alarm laying around
tint Free, have extra 5% tint laying around
Rally lights on front grille $30 ish on ebay
painting rims (included in original paint cost)
racing seats (looks like we can get a set used for $80, we'll see!)
Roll bar (found one for a mini truck for $10, think we can use that, at least as a starting point)
Custom sheet metal dash (should be around $10)
Carb cleaner spray $2
carb/injector gas additive $2
plexiglass for replacement triangle window $5
rubber seals $5
misc hoses clamps $15
master cylinder $25
battery $25
So there you have it, I am probally forgetting some small things here or there, but thats pretty much everything for the most part. Not too bad for a $450 car huh? We'll see how it turns out, but so far it looks like it will be fun. Ohh and its not registered and wont be, we plan on buying a small cheap trailer to just tow it to events or off road parks or where ever we decide to go beat on it!
