1990 civic dx, not running distributor?

I just bought a 1990 civic dx, bought it knowing it wasn't running, hoping to fix it up for either a cheap second car or sell it as a running vehicle. The previous owner had it stall on him while driving and couldn't get it started again. Apparently his mechanic told him it was his distributor. The engine cranks when i try starting it but doesn't catch. So I need to make sure I have fuel as well as spark. How do I run codes? I read something about the computer being under the pass side carpet, I assume behind the metal guard that is there. I already know the main relay is code 16, but what is the code for a bad distributor? I was hoping to have it up and running this weekend, but it has been too cold for me to work on it. So i would like to have a good idea of what I'll be doing so I'm not freezing for too long. On the chance that it isn't my distributor, What else should I look for?

Start by listening for whether the fuel pump primes and whether there is bright whit spark at all 4 spark plugs.

Here's how to check for codes:

Ya I can see it now. I will try running codes when I get off work, also be checking for spark and listening for the fuel pump prime. Could the main relay be responsible for stalling a vehicle while in motion?
