Hey guys,

I'm not familiar with the new 8th gens at all. How often are you supposed to service/replace the timing chains, if at all? Also, what else needs to be replaced? I know the spark plugs should get done. The car has 100,8xx miles and it's an 06 EX.

timing chains would normally get done around 100k or so. Plus your usual plugs, filters(fuel, oil), change out your fluiids..engine oil, tranny fluid, powersteering fluid, maybe get your cooling system flushed..Etc.

Also there is no set schedule. The 06 Civic has a "maintenence minder" system which tells you via an instrument panel indicator when service is due. The car keeps track of various parameters such as number of starts, miles/KMs and/or RPMs as well as the time since the last service. The indicator will tell you what type of service to perform. It's all documented in the owner's manual. Look for "maintenence minder".

And if you register your car on Honda.com there is a tab there which helps you keep track.

Timing BELTS would normally get done around 100k, you really shouldn't ever have to change your timing chain. Just make sure to keep with oil changes and you'll be fine.

Very true, tho you dont need to change it you should consider having it checked between 100-150k, a lot of things on cars are designed to last the life of the car. I know a few people with 8th gen civics and had to have thiers replaced already..not to say they didnt beat the hell out of the car. either way checking it for wear is still a good idea in my opinion.

Thanks guys. According to someone on Honda-Tech, all that really needs to be changed is the spark plugs, cabin/engine air filter, fluids, and that's it. I didn't know the 8th gens required very little maintenance.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to have the timing chain checked either.

The 8th gen doesn't have a maintenance schedule like 6th gens do. According to my brother, that's what a lot of 8th gen owners complain about: the manual doesn't have any information regarding maintenance. No schedule, nothing. Like in the 6th gen, it tells you what to inspect, how often, and depending on normal driving or more severe driving. Yeah...8th gen's don't have that at all apparently.
