5-bolt conversion for EK hatch?

Hi everybody,

I would like to do a 5-bolt conversion to my '99 hatch. I've seen guys around the GTA with them done (on everything from 6th gens to 4th gens and CRXs) so I was curious if anybody could suggest a good starting point? Maybe a good shop that does the conversion often and can offer a good price? Or possibly even a good place to source out parts?

I've seen conversion kits on eBay going for like $700US, but when you tack on the $400US+ they want for shipping all the stuff then put labour in AND add in any parts that may be missing (there's always missing parts) it's more expensive then if you just go out and get it done locally. Oh, and that doesn't include taxes, 5-bolt wheels, and tires!

Any help at all would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you have an engine swap? I hope you're not planning to do all this for a D16Y7.

I think most of the parts you need for the 5 lug conversion can come off of an ITR. Can anyone verify this? If so, then you can get them from your local junkyard.

It's a pretty big project to get involved in. It would be worth it if you had a lot of other CTR mods and CTR rims, otherwise I'd say put the money somewhere else first.

my 5 lug conversion came from a usdm teggy R

and one question, why wouldnt it be worth it to do this if he still has the Dseries??? brakes/braking is just as important as speed/power

To me it is more of a need-based purchase - it doesn't particularly raise your funfactor.
Edit: "Dude, it was a blast! We went out to an empty office park and hit our brakes a lot!" 8)

steve8091 - Actually the car still has the stock D16Y7 under the hood. I agree with you that maybe it isn't worth putting the work and effort into the car if the powerplant isn't really up to snuff. But, I've owned the car since new and I don't have any plans of dumping it any time soon. Besides, you have to admit the stock brakes on these cars are CRAP, regadless of what powerplant is under the hood.

Ramd0m - I agree with your sentiments: brakes and braking potential is just as important (if not more so) as engine output/power.

FerioSpeed - I realize that this is a big endeavor, but it's not impossible. Like I said earlier, I've seen other cars with it so I know it's not impossible to do. As for other Civic Type R items on my car, I do have a few items, but most of them are mainly cosmetic stuff (side skirts, front lip, side molding, rear spoiler, front grill, titanium shift knob, driver & passenger JDM vents. I also have a CTR front sway bar on the way, but I just found out that I can't install it until the lower control arms are replaced with Si/SiR or Type R units).

4thengine - I don't mind getting parts from a junkyard, but before I start rumaging around for parts, I need to know what parts to look out for. Do you know if there's a list of ALL the parts needed for the conversion? Maybe even with part numbers? That would be a great help to start off with.

Thanks for all the postings guys.

I didn't mean to rip on you, I just wasn't sure why you were doing the upgrade. It does act as a nice basis onto which you can build controllable power, but I would tend to do things in the opposite order. And yes, I agree that our stock brakes are complete crap. They were designed to stop stock wheels given 106hp through the transmission. It seems like if you go beyond that in any respect, even a little, they fail fairly quickly.

I'm sure that if I tried to give you a list half of it would be missing. One thing to think about, however, is brakes. Since your 4 lug rotors won't work anymore, maybe at the same time you should consider upgrading to ITR brakes.
*edit---The reason why I'm not even going to try is that I haven't done this conversion, None of my friends have tried it, and I honestly think that you probably know more about what to get than I do. Try looking at the kits, and see what pieces they include. Then go to a Junkyard and pull them from a CTR or ITR

steve8091 - I know you weren't trying to rip on me dude, you asked a very good question. And maybe I should do things the opposite way and bolt up a B16B motor first. But I know what will happen, the car will have WAY more power than the stock brakes can handle, and I'll get into trouble real quick (I don't drive slow, so it's inevitable).

4thengine - I didn't mean for you yourself to give me a list of items, I just meant someone in general. But thanks anyway. And like I said, I could try to start rummaging around in junkyards and stuff, but I don't want to start without knowing what I need. Besides, the chances of finding a scrapped ITR or even a Civic Si/SiR in the junkyard with the components I would need is pretty slim to none.

But that raises a good question. Does anybody HAVE a list of items that would be needed to do a 5-bolt conversion for an EK Civic?

Thanks again for posting guys.
