Recently bumped up my budget for a car search.

Wanted some thoughts on the 7th gen civics. I read the auto's are a nightmare and to stay away from them. Is this true? I'd prefer a manual anyways.

Found this car, manual, 140k miles, coupe.

Safetied 2001 HONDA CIVIC COUPE,
http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-Safetied-2001-HONDA-CIVIC-COUPE-W0QQAdIdZ578467648

Price: $ 3,200.00

Price seems on par for what it is. Considering 5th and 6th gens with similar mileage go for about $2800-$3000

Are the manual trans in the 7th gen good to go? Motors reliable? I like the styling of the 7th gens.

Sorry for all the questions, know nothing about civics and just snRNA reliable, fuel efficient DD.

There's doesn't seem to be a whole lot of love around here for the 7th gen. I've got one, and I'm loving the 39 mpg on my 160 miles daily round trip! I'm also diggin the lines on the 7th, but mileage and reliability, simple and easy to work on, price of parts, that kinda stuff is what brought me to the party. Where else can you get all that for under four grand?
As far as the car in the link, looks good. There's a known issue with the automatic transmission, nothing specific, it's just not solid, it needs special fluids n such. Not a deal breaker or anything. The manual tranny, is better on many levels. My biggest concern, would be about another weak link in the civic. I would check the head gasket/cooling system! These cars are notorious for having a pin hole in the hg. Other cars, you can check the dipstick, usually that's enough. Because it happened to me, I've noticed lots of people here, saying "there's not any water on the dipstick, how can it be a bad hg? ". Like I said I've been there, none of the usual signs indicating a hg problem. But there it was, and because of spare time issues, and lack of a competent mechanic, had to go to the dealer for repairs. Cost was over a grand! So my advice is to go into this knowing what to look for, don't get me wrong I love this little car! I'd do it all over again, since I got a extremely well maintained car for cheap! She must've known when she sold it, because it was priced right. But someone less honest, could get full price for it, sold as is. As it stands, I could've just bought from a dealer, come out the same! So the point is, check it over thoroughly, with special attention to hg problem, turns out, it's actually very easy to mask this problem, for the length of time it takes for a test drive. Don't mean to sound down on civic, like I said, I love mine now, great little driver, wish it was a manual tho. You'll love it!
