'88 Civic: Speedometer periodically reads way too high

Hi. New to this forum --- great site! My '88 Civic's speedometer has started to periodically read way too high (2-4X); but sometimes it still reads correctly. The odometer still works fine, regardless. As it is cable-driven, is my preliminary assumption correct that this is a mechanical problem (i.e., not electrical)? Any solutions other than replacing the speedometer with a reclaimed one? Thanks! Richard

Reply to CivicSwag RE: speedometer problem

Thanks. But as this is a 1988 Civic with a cable-driven speedometer/odometer, it therefore presumably does NOT have a speed sensor? (Gather that these were first used around 1992 or so?) Richard
