In the last few months, by ‘91 Honda Civic has occasionally exhibited a slight sputter upon acceleration. This happens sporadically, usually when the car hasn’t been driven for a few days, or I am going up a hill. It always corrects itself fairly quickly, but is still somewhat unnerving, as it feels as though the car is starting to die. My mechanic, hearing a rattling from the catalytic converter, though perhaps that was the trouble. While the old converter was indeed full of dust and broken bits, replacing it has not resolved the problem.
My mechanic next attempted to remove the spark plugs to do a compression test, but was unable to do so, as the aluminum casing around them had somehow melted them into place. He felt attempting to go any further would potentially damage the engine and would be quite costly, he recommended leaving it alone for now, as the car is still technically drivable.
I am not comfortable, though, driving this car now, as its underlying condition is unknown. Has anyone out there with a 4th gen Civic experienced a slight sputter/cough while accelerating, and what did you end up doing about it?
Thanks!
