91 honda civic speedometer

I own a 1991 Honda Civic Wagon, and a year ago or so I had my clutch replaced and instead of pulling the motor, the mechanic hoisted the motor up, and when he was putting in back down he heard a crack and ever since the speedometer and odometer do not work. I've inspected it, and the cable is good all the way down to where it connects to the transmission. It looks like the speedometer driven gear is loose at the connection to the transmission. I am unsure of how to fix the speedometer gear itself. Is it as easy as replacing the speedometer gear and gear holder? or could it be something different? Can anyone give me any advice on what I should do? Or what NEEDS to be done?

Have you checked the VSS?

There's no VSS. It's a cable-driven system.

Start by pulling the speedometer cable out from the top of the transmission and inspect it. If it looks fine insert it back into the transmission and push down hard to make sure it is firmly seated.
