Both. There are little L.E.D.s that are associated with all the buttons, plus there are 2 bulbs that light up the panel that shows where the air is moving (defrost, vents, lower, etc).

It's a pain in the ass. I just relocated mine down to an audio console as my flip out screen was blocking the controls when open. I did some searching here and on google and came up with the answer. I don't remember where I saw it, but I ended up figuring it out regardless.

You have to remove the head unit first to get to the screws. There is 2 on the bottom up against the front that mount it to the dash, just above the head unit hole. They are a real pain to get to if you don't have small hands. The 3rd screw is directly in the middle towards the back. That one is very easy to get out.

You also have to detach the 2 plugs (one on the bottom and one on the back up towards the top) and the cable. The cable gave me a bit of a fight as well, but wasn't all that hard. The cable needs to be out to allow the controls to come out of the dash, but others have said the plug wires are long enough to allow it to hang if you don't want to remove it all the way. My cables weren't long enough for that though, but I was relocating it so it didn't matter.

Good luck. They didn't make it easy that's for sure.

Yeah. There is no way to get to the screws with the head unit in.
