so i got my stock 92 civic vx, fist came tint: 5%murdered back windows and 50% hair past legal in front, new stereo/speakers. 15" civic si rims with 205/50/15 tires. Cold air intake with k&n filter, New headers/test pipe/catback. A/C deleted for weight savings, Full set of new struts w coils at factorry height(so dont scrape exhaust) This things purrs kindly, is pretty quick and can get 50mpg with a light foot and 35 heavy footed at all times. Other small things: full tune up, oil change, ngk sparkplugs and cables, new alternator belt, rear wheel bearing but otherwise this 280k miles car is rdy for 700k more easy! anyone with suggestions as what todo next to add lil boost without engibe swap? throttle body, intake, cams, injectors, valave lash, cap n rotor, new head.. these are just some suggestions i've come across. thanks and may all your rides be smoooth. I'd say with all the mods it's about 10-15% faster and 70% more fun to drive!

Intake manifold and a throttle body and a tune you'll be happy

so you think my best next move is intake manifold and TB? seen TB from 65-70mm which would be best on this lil 1.5l d15z1? goal is to keep this car super reliable as well, not just all out speed so would a good aftermarket throttle body and IM create any other reliabilty issures? and what kind of gains when combined with the cold air and full exhaust already got from TB n IM? heard mixed reviews on adding new ECU's, causing problems etc.. so basically just want safest upgrades that are cost effective in performance and integrity of this car. Right now I'm thinking strut bars front and rear and some stiffer coils along w rear disc brakes from an integra. Your input is valued I'm still semi-noob as this is my first civic project car but been in and seen plenty of others modded out with great results sometimes and others where they f**k s**t up by adding performance parts. Looks like a good brand IM and TB together can run anywhere from $200-450 combined depending on brand, suggestions? and by tune what exactly do ya mean? thanks

Honestly any performance modifications aren't worth the money with those motors. Unless you plan to spent a lot of an N/A build or go turbo, save your money IMO. A few hundred $ for minimal performance isn't the way to go.

Intake, exhaust, header, TB, IM... you could get the most expensive ones on the market and you'll still get minimal gains. The biggest thing you'll notice is sound, not performance.

Enjoy the great MPG out of the car and save a few hundred $$!

yeah i understand theres not much point spending the equivelent of a new performance b-series motor on parts for this engine but i can say without a doubt i got some noticeable gains beyond sound via cai/headers/exhaust. guess i'm really just curious if adding TB and IM would make it less reliable. For now though I'm happy, its fun, its eco and its not a hybrid!

Keep in mind you have the 2nd most fuel efficient Honda ever made and it only pushed about 90hp stock. My suggestion is to just baby the hell out of the engine with top quality maintenance and if added performance is a must then upgrade to an HX (Y5) manual tranny for improved gearing. Im pretty sure it fits but look it up. The VX tranny has very long gears but the HX is less enough to noticeably improve response while maintaining solid MPG and only costing $200-$300.

your right and i do treat it like a best friend, it just got a 12" JBL subwoofer but I think I'll stick with your advice as the headers/intake/exhaust along with AC delete and removing rear seats have made this thing pretty dang quick for a car capable of 50 mpg and very fun. I think the tranny in it isnt the stock one my gears max mph are as follows: 1st: 30 2nd: 50 3rd: 72-75 4th (guessing about 100) 5th: no idea but at 65mph is at 2700rpm I'll try and lookup what the stock max mph are for stock vx and see if compares or is dif tranny as I bouth this thing with 280k and was told a new tranny was put in about 20k ago. Part of me does think just doing throttle body, intake manifold and cams/ B-series head might be worth it if could still be as reliable?? assuming all done right. I will say this it runs waaay better on 91 octane then 87, more power and better gas mileage, ive done several tests and always few more mpg with 91 and use fuel injector cleaner stuff every once and a while. Going for 1 million miles~ I also did full new strut and coils set on all four corners but didnt upgrade or replace any bushings or camber/control arms and still takes bumps pretty bad but corners better so curious if my bushings are shot? Only upgrade left I'm def doing is rear disc brakes from an integra rs. Oh and to all the haters who say youll get NO gains from headers/intakes/catback on N/A 1.5l are obviously not basing that on any real world experience as even my mechanic who drove it before and after new exhaust was impressed. Lil more torque off the line but mostly feel the difference at 4000-5500rpm.. I'd guess I gained 7-8hp at full rpms, lost 50lbs through removing factory airbox, AC system and rear seats which on a 2000lb car adds up to about 9-10% power to weight increase. I'm a noob to being honda lover but my love is growing and will be happy to help anyone with questions or advice about similar 92-95 civics. May we all drive fast, furious yet safe and forget about the trump gameshow going on, put on some jazz and give our ladies endless orgasms instead.=)

Speed range

(max speed on gears,

top gear value theor.):

(km/h/mph)

I:

62 / 39 mine is about 30-32

II:

114 / 71 mine is about 50-55

III:

188 / 117 mine is about 75

IV:

235 / 146 mine is about 100-110

Keep in mind that your perceived performance improvement is likely due to the weight removal and potentially different tranny rather than the headers/intake/exhaust upgrades which only allow a less impeded flow. Be careful making such bold statements against the experienced when your self admittedly new to this. Humility and an open mind go a long way.

Secondly, you havent mentioned what your miles per gallon have been. I find it difficult to believe that a stock VX engine is running better on 91 than 87 octane as its not designed to do so. Therefore, theres a chance some ignition or tuning upgrades have been made factoring in that the tranny may not be original. You should confirm which tranny it has by looking for identifying numbers. Again, dont blindly assume but figure out why this is the case.
