93 SOHC VTEC? (Newbie question)

What's up guys?

I don't know too much about imports, but a kid I know says his '93 Civic has a VTEC motor. It's definitely an SOHC, there is only one cam gear. My question is, could this car be a VTEC? In my limited knowledge, I thought that the VTECs were only DOHC? He's known to BS, he even had a fake BOV at one time. I simply did not know enough about the car to call BS on him, so I figure I'd ask at a forum that would know... thanks for the info guys.

some SOHC's have VTEC.......what civic model was it??? .......if it was a 93 EX or Si...then it has VTEC

yep, they make a sohc vtec engine. the first was d16z6 then there was the d16y7 then the d16y8, and i believe there are also some 4 cylinder sohc vtec motors from accords, but thats all. if its a 93, then its either an si hatch, ex coupe or sedan with a d16z6 engine in it...many of the valve covers from the years of the eg do not say vtec, it is easy to tell what engine he has tho. Shine a light down on the front of his block where the engine and trans connect and it will say d16 or d15 err whatever he has.

i dont think the d16y7 was VTEC....d16y7 are mostly found in 6th gen cars with out VTEC...like the LX, DX, CX.....

they definatly have a vtec in the 93 sohc if it a ex or si, i know bc i have the 93 ex and it is a sohc vtec but it doesn't say vtec so to find out you have to check the engine code and match it up with the code in civic specs forum of cc

One more question lol...

How did a VTEC for an SOHC car work? Is there more fuel injected, or is it something with valve duration or lift? I thought that a motor had to have two cams to be a VTEC.

He has an EX, I think, so you guys are probably right. Thanks a lot

Well the thing is, the way I always understood it, one cam would spin and operate 2 of the valves, and then at a set RPM the other would kick in and lift the other 2... was I just wrong with this assumption? If so, how would it work? I'm not tryuing to prove anybody wrong or anything, I honestly just want to learn how VTEC functions.

ya heh, it helps to know the ins and outs of an engine, then it all makes more sense.

yeh man mine is an SOHC VTEC, the 2nd cam gear only changes the intake, not exhaust
