94' Civic EX Overheating

I just bought a 94' Civic EX and i noticed that water is forced out from the top where the radiator cap goes when i accelerate. I thought it could have been just the cap, so i changed it, but the same thing happens. I also noticed the oil has been getting watery too, so i think it could be a blown head gasket. I don't drive it around much, but i drove it the other day out of town and on the freeway, and i noticed on the freeway it wasn't really going anywhere fast when i stepped on the pedal. By the time i got back to town, i noticed the thermostat gauge started going up and by the time i got home and parked it, the gauge was at the top. It's the first time it's reached the top since i bought it. A friend told me he had the same problem, and changed the water pump and fixed the problem but i still have a feeling it could be the head gasket. What could it be..?

Watery/milky oil is usually a good indication that it's the head gasket. As for the coolant coming out of the top of the radiator, I would flush it completely, check the head gasket, replace if needed, check rad hoses/core for splits and cracks, and refill with coolant.

It's your head gasket. Make sure you get the head resurfaced, if you went into the red, it's warped. The coolant is bypassing the rad cap because your engine compression is going into the cooling system.

There's also a chance you cracked a sleeve, but it's more likely that it's just the head gasket.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I agree with everything above. Definitely have the head resurfaced if it is off the vehicle, good insurance and will keep you from doing this repair again. While your doing this it's a good time for a water pump and timing belt if they have not been done recently.

Interested in what you find!
