I just replaced the head gasket and had the head machined due to overheat. If I had the timing belt off 1 tooth would it overheat?:(
also I'm now getting exhaust through the cooling system. Would that be a simple blown head gasket again or cracked head?

shouldn't overheat but I would suggest checking your thermostat. I had a 91 dx with the same motor, replaced the head gasket, had the head machined and it blew again a month later due to a faulty thermostat

If it was 1 tooth off, you would know. It would like crap, and be down on power. You could have a cracked head or even a block. Also, if there is junk on the surface of the block and/or head as you put it back together, you can also get a leak. I have seen on some engines where a bad bolt hole has cause problems similar to this. If you can get it to an emision testing station, if there willing, can pass there tailpipe sniffer near the radiator opening and see if it is actually getting exhaust in the system. There is alaso a dye you can add that will turn a color if exhaust is present.

The dye is greenish blue and if it detects exaust from the top of radiator it turns yellow, I have the kit and it turned yellow. after I removed the head I found #1 cylinder intake and exhaust valves had signs of moisture

Did you get the head machined to make sure you have a flat surface? what about the block? Most people only do the head as they dont think the block usually warps. Put a machinists straight edge on it and check. With the head off, rotate the crank and see if you can see any cracks in the cylinder walls. Did they magnaflux the head when you had it off?
