97 HX gear ratios

I may sound like a noob asking this, but is there any way to "lengthen" the HX transmission ratios? I hate how often I have to change gears. I know you cant just bust open a tranny and change the ratios real quick. Should I just swap the tranny? Is it possible to swap it with something better without changing the engine as well?

Well not to be an ass but the so called "fun" of a manual is the changing of the gears. Once youve driven a 5-6speed for a long time you do it with out even thinking about it or noticing. You can always Skip shift, I pretty much always go 1-2-5. I think an HX has the same trans as a Dx which is about as long as the gears get. Though I've seen some people say the CX has longer gears, but I don't know if that's true cause I don't care enough to look it up =).

Yes the cx tranny is the longest geared, the hx tranny is long as well so if your shifting alot maybe its a ex tranny that someone swapped in before you, my hx has an ex tranny and in 5th gear at 65mph im at like 3500rpm

Hmmmm, very interesting... My gears are SUPER short so someone could've swapped the tranny. And at 65 mph my rpm's are at about 3,500 as well

And Trekk, you didn't come off as being an ass, just being real, much appreciated. Don't get me wrong I LOVE driving my 5-speed, I'm just not into how often I have to shift, and living in Nebraska we have A LOT of hills, that go on for miles, even in town so constantly shifting up and down is a bit of a work-out

Well thats probably the problem, my car is boosted and i can go up most hills without downshifting, then i driving my gfs 98 lx d16y7 and it can only do 55 up most hills and thats in 3rd gear trying to not bog down. Civic are just to gutless and it doesnt help putting a longer geared tranny on, some day i want to put an ex tranny on her car and then the hills will be much better

What is it about your shifting that feels like you "must" shift too soon? Please explain, such as where you shift in terms of RPMs, if you're shifting when the indicator light comes on, if you're redlining very early and so on. You can confirm which tranny you have by popping the hood, looking at the front left of the engine bay where the tranny is & read the engraved badge. Its in unobstructed sight unless your engine bay is heavily dirty. It should read D16Y5 if its an HX tranny.

If you don't like to shift that often, then why don't you just convert your civic to an Automatic? It will be a bit costly, but you will never have to shift lol. I know a few people that converted their car to an Automatic. I don't know why people would do the convert though, if you wanted an Automatic, then they should of bought an Automatic. The fun part about a 5/6 speed, is changing the gears and working the clutch. And having the entire power of the car, in the palm of your hands. But thats just my two cents. lol. Just my opinion. ;)
