98 Civic EX transmission issues?

Okay so I'm new to this site. Just bought my Civic a month or two ago. 98 Civic EX 5 speed. Lately I've been hearing a lot of noise from the transmission area. Not sure if it is the clutch going bad or the transmission. Lady I bought it from said she had the transmission rebuilt not long ago. But never replaced the clutch?? Im wondering what kind of symptoms, noises I would get if its a bad clutch or transmission.

Car in neutral, clutch pedal not pushed in -- noise.
Car in any gear while driving -- noise.
Changing gears -- no noise.
Shifter feels sloppy even after shift linkage bushings installed. More of a side to side sloppiness.
Clutch grabs almost at the very top of releasing the pedal.
Feels as if it is getting harder to shift into 5th.
Car bucks/jerks when accelerating 1st-3rd gears. Horrible bottom end. After 3k RPM it runs fine.

Any other info needed let me know. I drive it enough. I'd like some input as to whether replace the clutch and flywheel. Or buy a used tranny from the salvage yard. Thanks all.

Wow it seems like your tranny's bad...a high clutch pedal could mean the clutch is bad.

I suggest buy a new clutch kit and a new transmission if that one does not get better. Can usually find them for around 200 around here.

Yea im not sure what is wrong with it yet. I suppose I'll find out how bad I have it once I tear out the transmission to put in a new clutch. Since im going to have it out anyway. What should i be looking for? And what other parts are recommended to be replaced while im that far in? Any recommendations on what clutch/flywheel i should put in? Again thanks for the input.

Just get your flywheel resurfaced and for the clutch get the Exedy OE replacement.

look for oil, replace the rear main seal behind the flywheel. make sure u check for any oil on the top of the tranny. see if the distributor is leaking any oil. check all your clutch lines for rust and leaks. as far as clutches go I would go with oem replacement if you plan to do a engine swap in the near future. Stock flywheel or light weight doesn't matter. light will give u faster rpms but will drop in rpms if u shift to slow. If u are gonna beat on your engine and race I would go with a stage 2 sprung clutch if you DD your car.

Never beat on it. Not doing a motor swap. Keep in mind guys the car only has 134k. I do DD this car as its my only car at the moment. Work a lot of hours during the week so the only time for removing the transmission is on the weekends. Could I have it out and back in by a Sunday night?

Ok here we go...

Get the tranny rebuilt or new trans.
New slave and m/c.
New flywheel, clutch and throwout.

Replace everything if u plan on using the d series for a bit. If not, get a swap and put money into it with new parts mentioned above...

If you have someone else with you that has experience, and you have the proper tools, you should be able to get it out and back in the car in a few hours. It's not too bad.

transmission can re removed and installed in about 2 and half hours .
only need one person . and don't need many tools for this job .

but since it's your dd I wouldn't wait tell Sunday . just in case Somthing goes wrong .
I would start it Friday night so then Saturday you can see I'f you need to order more parts and stuff

Working on a budget. Could possibly buy a trans. I saw somewhere that had remanufactured transmissions. That would probably be better than getting mine rebuilt or throwing one in from a junk yard where who knows what was wrong with that one. All in all I know it wont be cheap. Price to pay to drive a nice car. ;)
