I'm a one owner 98 civic ex. Since it just turned 16 this month, I'm sweet 16ing it up. Got cold air intake, header, and new exhaust. A lot quicker but I want more horses. I was thing of a high performance chip, but heard mixed reviews. Any suggestions, other than a turbo, to get more power?

I would suggest doing some research on the results of these modifications (intake, header, exhaust, and similar bolt ons).

The hp gain is typically minimal. Not worth the cash in a lot of people's eyes.

The civic was made to be an economy car. A reliable and fuel efficient commuter. If you want real power then your only real options are to swap for a larger motor, or turbo your current motor.

These "chips" you're referring to are gimmicks that offer no real benefits.

So to answer you're question.. A suggestion other than turbo, would be a motor swap. You can build your current motor NA (naturally aspirated) but again, the gains will not be very significant and you will spend a good deal of cash, and at that point, you may as well swap or boost.

The intake, exhaust, and header didn't give you anything worth it other than a new sound. The louder sound just makes it feel like you gained more speed. For all that money, the gain was highly likely to be less than 10hp and that you aren't going to really feel the difference on this type of vehicle. The numbers don't lie and they are usually very minimal on a car that was produced for people to commute in and save gas.

The only real quick bang for your buck is going to be turbo or swap to a larger motor.

Performance chips are snake oil and don't do a damn thing on a Civic.

if your going to get a "chip" get a real chipped ecu not a "chip" off ebay, buy an obd2a-obd1 conversion harness then go get your car dyno tuned, possibly bump up your fuel octane to 91 so you can have the tuner pull more timing and you will gain probably 10whp with a good tune.

needs moar turbo in my opinion
