i have a 99 civic wit b16 and gsr trans. ive heard alot of back and forth on this and i need to know for sure what it is.. there is a whirrling noise comin from where the trans meets the block when i press the clutch in the noise stops. also u can hear it when ur driving. there is no loud rattling, mainly just a whirling noise, and no problems what so ever shifting. throwout bearing, or inputshaft bearing? and i am also having a slight idle issue. it jumps between 800 and 1300 and sometimes it seems like it wants to stall. its not all the time either just sometimes. it drives fine though any help would be appreciated

Noise issues are hard to troubleshoot online. Does the clutch hold when you stomp on the gas? I ask because a warn out clutch will some times make noise. I could see the throwout bearing doing it as well. I remember reading some place that Honda doesn't recommend using the pilot/input shaft bearing but that could be a problem as well. I don't remember where I read that but it was in relation to my B16a2 I did this past summer. My pilot bearing would even fit so I didn't use it from my Xcedy kit anyway...

I don't know what else to say except maybe pop open the inspection cover on your trans and have a look around. Or else drop your trans and just do a clutch kit/flywheel and be done with it.

Good luck man!

ive been reading for hours and i just keep getin the same thing. everyone is saying its the throwout for some reasons and the isb for the exact opposite sounds they say when u put the clutch in and the noise stops its isb because its taking the pressure off when u have the clutch in.. others say its throwout when u push the cluth in the noise stops because its putting pressure on the throwout effectivley silencing it while clutch is in .... this is just soo annoying, evetytime i think i got it someone else says the opposite. is there an actual way to know what it is without checkin both? please help! also wuld like to just have some ideas on my idle problem

I just a did a complete clutch kit and new fly on the b16a2 which was a complete set of brand new parts. The ISB wouldn't even fit so I did a quick check online and found somewhere saying it wasn't even needed. I had no problems doing the install with out it and it drove fine and pulled hard. No noises, no problems. Just worry free driving and ripping it hard every day getting it on the on ramp heading to work every day.

I'm just saying, I didn't use it and I found some place saying not to. This may be incorrect info so take it with a grain a salt and do your own research. Maybe someone else can chime in on the subject. Google it too. Worked like a champ though.

As for the idle problem.. Do a search on "IACV" and you'll find pages and pages of stuff. Basically you clean the HELL out of it and it solves all your idling worries. I've done a few myself. Works pretty dang good. Of course you have your idle screw and maybe sticky throttle body, but... IACV is usually the fix on that.

And to answer your question about the noise and how exactly to verify which it is.. I can't think of anyway to verify that for 100%. It would sound like they're coming from the same place.

also adding to my clutch problem... if i just rest my foot on the pedal it makes a noise like a cricket just faster and if anyone has a link for replacing the isb (detailed prefferably) that would be extremely helpful

No way should you just replace the input shaft bearing (ISB) all by itself. That would be absolutely absurd! Besides, I don't think you can even buy them alone can you? They come in every clutch kit so i'm sure someone has one for free, but again, why would you ever consider pulling the trans out JUST to get that small bearing out?? That's such a waste of time/money.

But to answer your question on a detailed write up, search "replace clutch" or something along those lines because that's when you'd normally be messing with that small ass bearing (which I tossed in the trash).

im pretty sure that a clutch kit does not come with an ISB. it comes with a throw out but ive bought a few clutch kits and never had one with an ISB. and i would replace that bearing and anyother i came across along with new seals, because if an ISB is my problem id really prefer to fix it before my trans gets trashed
