a first time diy alarm will take 4-5 hours.. most alarm installers take about 2 hours.. not really a easy task and its also very time consuming.

Having a wiring diagram is key. Also a multimeter to verify wires. I install about 3 alarms a week at my shop and average 3 hours each on non remote start. The reason for taking so long is because our shop hides everything from plain view.

This is a good site to get the wiring info for free, http://bulldogsecurity.com/diagrams/diagrams.htm

Depending on what type of alarm and extras you have will depend on how long it really takes.

6+ hours?! The installer MUST be getting paid HOURLY. Especially on a Civic! One of the most common car's in the install bay!!!

yeah i installed my compustar 2-way pager alarm myself, it took a couple of hours (making sure i found the correct wire i needed and then soldering each connection) if you have a wiring diagram with the wires you are looking for and their locations then its easy-peezy. civics are pretty easy to install alarms on, its pretty straight forward, so go for it. if you run into any snags or are wondering about wire locations and such just post again.

98 civic huh....guess since I have a 99 and I am an installer I could give you all the wireing info from directed's website for installers. I't takes me about 2 hours and over half of that is prep work on a civic. Do you have a manual or a auto....you have to bypass the clutch for the remote start. That's probably the hardest because of the damn location of the wires. Also, what brand of alarm is it?

I must of posted this 5 times now :p

Prepping for a Civic has to be the easiest. You can grab all your wires for the keyless entry part of the install at the factory alarm plug (Which is green I believe), and the ignition, starter, acc, wires all in the ignition harness, and I think the tach wire is a blue wire at the top strut drivers side. 1 hr TOPS for me. That includes programming the alarm, and drilling for the LED :P

Yeah, most Hondas are very easy. The ignition harness is almost too easy to get to if someone wanted to take your car. It's pretty much right out in the open. The tach is by the driver strut tower and the factory alarm plug is green...I believe it's to the left of the steering column.

Whoops, I mis-understood your first post. Didnt intend on talking down on you that way. It just shocked me that I read "6 hrs" to install a remote start, and I didnt read the rest clearly... My bad bro

But yeah, to be honest remote starts really arent that hard. Its just a few extra more wires to connect. The most time consuming part IMO would be prepping it. Always measure twice, and cut once. Stay away from wires INSIDE yellow plastic-ish rubber covers, and at LEAST have a wiring diagram of your vehicle BEFORE you start tapping wires (For the newbies). Alot of installers say "Dont use a test light" I use one everyday at work. From what I learned, when probing wires with test lights, at least know what wire your testing for. Accel I think is the brand of my test light. I have a Snap-On one too, but I like the Accel one better. If your remote start needs a tach wire, the 12v test light wont find it. Grab the DMM or an AC type test light instead for the tach wire (If your remote start requests it). I know someone remote starts like THOR ask for the (+) Oil light wire in your dash, but Id stay away from those types. Better off with a remote start that requests tach input.
