Alarm Suggestions

Since I'm doing all this improvement work to my Civic, I figured it was time to invest in an alarm. I have no idea what's out there and what's good. I don't want to spend too much money, but I don't want a shitty alarm either. I don't have power locks and I have no use for an auto-starter. I just need something to scare off potential stereo-snatchers.

Depends where you live. If it's like a quiet community with private houses you will need any alarm that can "scream", if you live in the area w/multiapartment houses and noisy streets, you better rent a garage.
Here in NY nobody really pays attention on the car's alarm. Alarm can work for 5-10 mins and nobody cares. When I drive, I "detonate" a lot of alarms because of my exaust =) And I never saw anyone really payed attention on it. Maybe only cops would come to give a ticket for loud alarm.
So my opinion - get a garage or expensive alarm with gps tracking system.

The best is the viper 791, I have this with a motion sensor, back-up battery, and i added in door locks, because i started with a dx frame, for $80 a door. $50 for the part (actuator) and $30 for labor per door. This has a 2-way paging system built into the key pad. I also added in extra sirens and ear piercers (inside), and hood locks (key locks). I havent lost anything yet, in 8 years. My roomates would get broken into with one tenth the mods, but not me. I also changed the l.e.d. light to another colour to throw off people from knowing exactly what it was i had also.

The only problem with motion sensors is if you live in an apartment that s**t is gonna go off everyday from people walking by.

lol, they don't care in Dallas/ Ft Worth/ Arlington either.

Coming out of the movie theater at the mall and on the 2nd floor of the parking garage car alarm is going off. Hundreds of people there and no one even looked at it.

I'm in rural VT most of the time, but the area is a common place to lose a stereo to a high/stoned/both college student. So prolly just something that'll scream for a bit will do the jaerb. I saw one on sale at Circuit City for like $75. I couldn't tell you what it was (since I don't remember) but I guess since I dont' need much, anything is better than nothing.

D.E.I. ownes clifford. The top of the line clifford and viper are the same. you basically have like a viper 671 or something. 2-way pager built in to the keypad?

like I said, it's the same as viper, dei ownes them, so they are just being lazy releasing it. I have a clifford key pad ($150) that has the 2-way for my viper alarm! I got it cus it's carbon fibre.

Stoned college students? You might want to look into some pain generators for the cabin, lol. The more difficult you make it, the more likely a less determined theif will give up. And make it really loud! You shouldn't have a problem with cops in a rural area.. I'd say that's more of an urban issue.

Most importantly, get a reputable installer, and when you get your s**t installed, before you leave whatever shop you took your car to, make sure the hood and trunk pins work. Meaning, arm your alarm, and manually open the trunk or hood. Alot of installers dont install that part of the alarm. You can get all the features that DEI has with lower brands, and lower prices ;) and just because they are lower brands and prices, doesnt mean they arent reliable. CrimeStopper's line has been FLAWLESS with my experiences. Never had a return customer complaining. They have that 2way LCD stuff too, and remember most alarms you can always upgrade/add-on more sensors.

Most alarms DO NOT come with hood pins unless you have a remote start system. It can be added and then use another trigger such as the door trigger or trunk trigger. The new Viper systems (I have the 5000 Responder, 2 way pager system) have a plug with inputs for hood pin, so it will actually say hood on my pager screen, but the hood pins are not included. I wouldn't trust anything less than a DEI alarm. Check the sales and stats for alarms, DEI is the industry standard.

Most alarms dont come with hood pins?! I know Crimestopper's line does, Scytek, some THOR alarms... Just read the box of its contents. I know a couple shops that REMOVE the hood pins before selling you the alarm, so they can charge you more for installation. I have a bunch of hood pins lyin around here, so if anyone wants 1 just let me know. I'll probably just be sending out 3-5 or so cause Im too lazy to send all of them out =P
