My 98 civic came with an after market alarm system accept it works like a stock alarm i think. It only goes off if the door is locked and then unlocked withought the button. Also the siren alarm thing is in the inside of the car and you can barly hear it when u are outside. The key has 3 buttons 1 unlockes the door the other just makes the lights go on and off and i have no idea of what the other one does. So i was thinking since i didnt buy this alarm system maybe its just on a different setting and it might have like a shock sensor or something. Is it possible to change the settings on an alarm sysem if so where would i find the part to tune?

Its probably the way it is. I have seen older/cheaper alarms do this. There isnt a shock sensor, but only a door ajar sensor after its activated. Get a new one.

You should set the alarm off in the car while you sit inside of it.

As for aftermarket, it all depends what you want it to do. Just shop around, figure out the features you want and buy it. :ok:

Just get a good reputable installer, and if you live in a rough neighborhood pick up a motion sensor. So what if it picks up false triggers like cats and whatnot, IMO better safe than sorry

this doesn't belong in DIY. Moved to interior/audio/electronics.

Get the back up battery and the pain generator piezo siren installed in the cabin. The siren under the hood should no tbe able to be cut easily if at all. It should also be pointed down so the sound reflects off of the pavement and some have differant settings for the siren too. You want shock sensor and most come with one. Also, don't let them put the led anywhere that can be seen unless you are looking in the window because otherwise you are just saying "hey look at me...I got cool stuff". Make sure the brain is hidden not just tucked up under the dash, same with the valet button. The alarm is only as good as the installer.....make sure they are MECP. If not...walk away. You can have more than one alarm on a car but it is pointless. Do some research and really check things out first.

If you just want the basics like a keyless entry, starter kill, siren/horn, parking lights/turn signals, shock sensor installed, give me any shitty brand and I'll make it as good as any Viper or DEI branded alarm with the same features.

KARR Security alarm techs... Some are not MECP certified. Yet they install more alarms than DEI. They ONLY install at dealerships. They dont advertise or nothing. ONLY at dealerships. So if you got your car at a dealership call and ask if they have an account with KARR, and ask them if they'd hook you up with an alarm. Though the dealership will charge you up to 4x what KARR charges the dealerships so beware of that
