Alpine Type-R questions.. Getting ready to buy

I am about to purchase a 12' Alpine Type-R subwoofer. I have to 2 questions before I purchase. What is the difference between 2 ohm and 4 ohm? And also, what is the difference between the 2004 model type-R and the 2005 model Type-R?

Does anyone have these subs and could tell me a little bit about them?

thanks

I have the Type R 12inch Sub, didn't know they have a new 2005 model, I brought mine over a year ago & its still working sweet, am going to get another Tyoe R Sub because this one has taken a beating from a few shitty amps.

Not 100% sure but believe the 2 ohm is more powerful, you could running a better/higher wattage amp on that sub but like I said am not 100% sure.

With the 2 ohm, there is less resistance on the power you run to your sub, so in short, you basically get more power out of your amp. However, your amplifier will need to be 1 ohm stable, if you buy the 2 ohm. However, if you buy more than one sub, the wiring gets more complicated.

if these are 2ohm DVC he can only power one sub off of a 1 ohm stable amp. Running two of these will fry the s**t out of the amp. You can get more power out of the 2ohms but it will put a lot more stress on your amp, you will need a good amp that won't overheat. A lot of amps will tell you they are stable, but will bounce into protect very easily from the heat.

I just posted a thread that may help understand a little better

he can run 2 of these off of a 2 ohm mono stable amplifier. series parallel wiring will present a 2 ohm load..

he can also fun one of these dual 2s off any class AB amplifier, for a 4 ohm mono load. any amplifier that puts out around 500 rms into 4 ohms mono would be just fine on it.

yeah my bad...you would hook up 1 coil of each sub to the positive and the same coil to the neg of your amp. Then on the 2 left-over coils connect the positive to the negative on the same coil.

Are you kidding me?? I wouldn't run a class AB 500w RMS amp if you value your alternator. That will draw too much on your car, run a D....you don't need an AB on your subs.

I have an AB mono amp that I am contemplating even putting in my car...It puts out 400 RMS at 4 ohm and I am afraid the thing is going to kick my alternator's ass.

500 watts is 500 watts, whether it is a class AB or a class d. it still takes the same amount of amperage to produce it. the only difference is, a class d amp is more efficient at putting out power due to it's design. you will be fine with a 400 watt AB amplifier.

Right, a class D is more efficient...Therefor an AB amp draws more current on your electrical system to produce the same amount of wattage for the trade off of lower distortion. It isn't anywhere near a true class A amp, but an AB will create more strain on your electrical system. The low freq distortion from class D amps isn't even detectable on subwoofer applications, so there isn't really a reason to draw more current.

I have heard good things about these subs. I was going to get a pair but I need money elsewhere. As for the 2 ohm and 4 ohm you need to know what amp you are going to have powering them. You don't wanna get 2 2 ohm subs on an amp that can't handle it. Personally I would get 2 4 ohms to go with my alpine amp.

well, it is generally high frequency distortion that you experience with a class D amplifier, and it is filtered out through the xover for the most part. my point was, you arent going to kill your electrical system with a small AB amplifier of 400 or 500 watts.

So basically what would u prefer the 2 ohm or 4 ohm? I'm going to buy 2 12" R's when i get some $$$ and wondering what kinda amp to buy to power which one... i dont understand the electrical side of this =(

it will be cheaper for you to go 2 ohm, because you won't need as powerful an amp.

even at 12 volts a 500 watt rms amp should only draw around 45 amps of current which a stock honda alternator is able to support.
AB amps will give you more control and sound quality of your sub.
Class D amps will raise your distortion, lower your damping factor, which will effect the sound of your sub. But will overall drop your current draw to around 40 and lower the footprint size of the amp.

2005 model type r introduces the new hammer engineering. Which cools the voice coil better and offrers a rolled surround(very much like the old Cerwin-Vega Pros) to allow further excursion

whether or not its a mono amp or an AB you will still need a 1000 watt rms amp to run two type r Alpines.

The only advantage of running a CLASS D is current draw.
Not all mono amps are class D, Many are still AB monos.

If you run 1000 watts on a class d you will pull around 80 amps of current. eventually you will need a bigger alternator

you run 1000 watts of an ab you will pull around 110 amps of current and will need an upgraded alternator right away.

I have a 1 Farad capacitor.. how will this change the situation? Also I am only thinking about running 1 Type-R sub.. Probably with a 600 watt amp.. let me know

if your charging system isn't big enough to run your amplifiier having a cap won't do anything.

at 500w a cap will help (although not cure the issue) but at 1000w, it won't do much. it'll work the best with an alternator upgrade.
