Im no n00b when it comes to sounds but ive always had an after market headunit with sub outputs. Its not going in a honda its for my dads truck and i was gonna hook up a sub and amp in his truck but im not gonna change the headunit. i know how to hook up the subs and amp but i dunno how to get a sub output to the amp. do i use a crossover?

im using a mono MTX amp and a single 12" punch.

you'll need either an amp that accepts hi-level (speaker) inputs, or an RCA converter (converts speaker level signal to low level RCA signal.)
I'd prefer the latter, in your situation, and then use that to patch RCA signal to the amp..

any car audio shop should carry them. they're about 20 bucks or so..
As for a line-level converter for RCA output on a stock head unit.. They'll know..

They look like this:

This one is one of the better units.. There are less expensive (cheaper designs) out there, but for running a sub amp, they'll do fine, as well, usually..

that audiolink one is pretty solid...i just used it recently in a 2006 Tacoma for a punch amp and 2 JL tens...

I know I am a n00b, but I actually have one I could give you that I used in my previous car (1997 TL). It is passive and does not need a power wire. It does the job fine and is easy to install. I have a Civic now with an aftermarket HU, so don't need a converter anymore.

PM me if you are interested. All I'd ask for is to pay shipping (should be like $4 tops). Sorry in advance if this type of post is against forum rules.

Ha! No, it's not a Pyramid - I will look at it tonight for the maker name. I know it is not a household brand name, but it worked great. It has inputs for left and right channels, so 4 wires altogether. It has 2 other wires that I assume are some type of ground wires, but I never used them. And of course it has the low level outputs, along with some quasi-gain adjustment.
