Any way to leave sunroof glass without the mechanical part?

My Ek has a home amde sunroof and it was done awfully. It started to leak inside so i took the roof liner off and It was all rusty and had a tone of holes. I tried filling them up with fiberglass but it reutrned to be useless., so I sleaed the gap between the roof and the sunroof rubber with black silicone (I was that desperate). Now, I'm remodeling the car and going to ahve a new headliner made, but I don't really want the sunroof there.

Is there any way I can take the mechanism off and Just leave the glass on there so I don't have to spend tons and tons on closing the hole and paint?

Yes. It can be there permamently, just find a way to keep it from sliding open like welding the rails down.

I want to keep everything else out, so can I just keep the rails and the glass? I want to remove as much from the sunroof so I can have a flat headliner again.

Actually, the fiberglass was covering the holes pretty good until I gave up. Way too many rust holes. THe sunroof was done by the precious owner so he covered them with some type of foam and when I noticed that I said "f**k this" and went and bought some silicone.
