I am intalling a friends system that she ripped out of her old car. The problem is that she can't get the box into the trunk, but it will fit perfectly if it were two boxes of half the size. I had planned to just chop the box in half and seal the two open ends..................BUT, I have an idea that would save myself time and her money. I want to chop the box in half and put 2 latches (like the one pictures below) per box side (4sides) with a rubber gasket in between the two halves to seal the box. Has anyone ever seen anything like this done?? How do you think it will work?? Do you have any suggestions as to what I should use for a gasket.

Does your friends rear seat fold down? maybe it will fit like that?
We're talking a Saturn here. Fold down seat has less space to put the box in then the trunk opening:lol:

2 cheap Kenwood subs are in the enclosure and the volume of the current box is 2.69 ft3 (sealed), subs are recommended 1.5 ft3 a piece (sealed). I do not want to go smaller with these things and she doesn't have the money for me to make her a new enclosure right now.

Don't do it, how can yall not afford to make a box?? It only costs the wood/nails you use.

The seal will still flex and you're going to find areas that are still blowing air through the seal. It doesn't sound worth it to me and this is coming from an installer. If you want something with the same or near the same box volume, a custom box would be the way to go to ensure that it will fit in the trunk.

i would do it, i just wouldnt use the latches...

this is what i would do, i would take 1"x1" sqaure pieces of wood and use wood screws and glue to mount them to the edge of the enclosure around the edge you cut. then i would drill 1/4" holes every 3"-4" in the 1"x1" and use bolts and wing nuts to mount the 2 halves together. for the seal i would use 3m window weld on the edge of the enclosure and on the edge of the 1"x1" s let the window weld tack up then screw each side together... or if that get too expensive cause now that i look at it looks like that way would nickle and dime you use the window weld and the latches. window weld is the ish the end of my air filter fell off and i used it to glue it back on you can also use it to fill your motor mounts cause it urethane you can get it at parts stores for around $18...if you need a diagram or pic of the way i suggested let me know and ill draw sumthin up...

Hmmmm. Car payments/insurance, rent, food, gas, lawyers, bills and 10x more things that a 18yr-old couldn't understand.

imo there would be less air blowing through the seal then their would be through the sub basket against the carpet.......a custom install will be done in the future.

it'll litteraly sound like ass because the air's gonna be squeezing through the rubber gaskets making farting noises.

sorry bro, but this is half assed if i ever heard it

it'd be just as easy and have a better result to partially dissmantle the box and put it back together in the trunk.

yeah, ok...well you don't know me so don't jump to conclusions that I am some spoiled kid that lives off my parents.

and you need to learn to be more resourceful if you can't piece together a box for a couple of dollars, because for the price of that latch idea you wanted you could build a new box. Wood is not expensive, and labor is free

wake up
