Are these muffler spring bolts on too tight?

I didn't realize there should be a gap between the two pipes and kept cranking down as much as I could.

You are missing the point. If you are going to work on your car, you need a torque wrench. Buy one and do the job correctly. Period.

Download the 96-00 Civic manual and look up the torque values for all nuts and bolts you remove.

Thanks I understand the importance of doing the job correctly. I do plan on picking up a torque wrench. In this case my muffler rotted out and people told me it's easy to switch out without a mention of proper torquing so I decided to try.

Since it's already installed, if the spring bolts are on too tight would it create any problems until I can loosen and re-torque to specs? I'm mostly curious in general what would happen if spring bolts are put on too tight as reference. Thanks
