AVIC-D2 Installation question

I just got my AVIC-D2 and have been told all kinds of crap about installing it, so now my brain is overheating with what is and what isn't necessary. I have the parts needed (mounting kit for my Civic and the wiring harness), but I'm unsure when it comes to the wiring what is absolutely necessary. Do I HAVE to wire it to the reverse light/sensor, speed sensor, etc. or are these just optional for add-ons (i.e., back-up camera)? Otherwise is this not a whole lot more difficult than installing a regular head unit (just twice the size)? Please give me some feedback about this before my head explodes and I never get the chance to use it :(

no you dont' HAVE to wire up the speed sensor, its for the vehicle dynamics thats in the unit, nothing too hard, just simply wire it like a regular headunit, but imho wire up the speed sensor and stuff just to have it done right, and the reverse lead is only if you have a camera for it, i'll be getting the same unit here in the next few weeks ;)

Well that's comforting to know. I suppose if I wanted I could wire that to the speed sensor at a later point in time, correct? If this is that simple than I could probably have this thing hooked up in no time. I'm guessing even my helpless self could do this job! =)

Speed sense does need to be hooked up for the nav to work. Its not just for vehicle dynamics. Depending on the year of your car you can probably get speed sense from the cruise control module in the driver's side kickpanel. Its an easy wire to get if you know where to find it.

The reverse lead also needs to be hooked up for nav. It tells the nav when you have the car in reverse. Its not just for the camera. On most civics you can go right to the shifter in an automatic and get the wire there. If its a standard transmission you should be able to go to the loom of wires running to the back of the car and get it there. If you tell me more about your vehicle I can probably get the wire colors and locations for you.

BTW if anyone is wondering I do own an AVIC-N3 and trust me if you want it to operate properly you do need to make all those connections.

I have a 2000 Civic Si, so any info on wire colors would be great. I don't want this friend of mine going hunting for unknown wires without adequate knowledge of what he's looking for...I just want to see this damn thing in my car!!!! =)

I will when it's completed...hopefully by Friday =) I had a friend take a look at executing the task for me and I thought he was going to start crying when he saw all the wires. In his words, "This is just a massacre of wires!"

are u using the wiring harness for hondas? cause if you are, like j_fukin_t said, the color of the wires should be almost identical, and match up the same colors. oh yea, did you this online? well wherever you bought it, how much did it cost and where did you buy it from?

I'm at work right now but either tonight or this weekend I'll go through my wiring diagrams and I can give you all the wire colors and locations to make everything super easy. I have the wiring diagrams for your car on my laptop. Sorry I can't get to it sooner but I work a fireman's schedule.

Thanks Mike. The other day when my friend and I were looking at the harness and the wires that came wiith the system it looked like I would have needed wire strippers to connect the two. Am I correct in my thinking or am I just incompetent? ;) I'm going to have a professional look at it today and assess the difficulty. I imagine anyone who has any intermediate experience with car wiring can probably do this in no time (and do it right). Any wiring diagrams would be appreciated, just PM me. Thanks!
