b16 or b18 for turbo project

I was thinking of starting a turbo project, and I have 2 Long blocks sitting around, but I can decide what one to use. The first one is a b18 Non-Vtec and the second one is a b16a vtec. I have asked many people this question and they all choose one, but never say why. I am leaning towards the b18 for a few reasons..... First it is already lower compression so more boost. Second I heard somewhere, but I don’t remember where, non-vtec motors boost better then vtec but I could be wrong on that one. Finally three the b18 is already in pieces so it would be easier to swap internals before starting. But I still don’t know what to do since all my projects have been NA advice on what block to use would be nice and no I don’t want to do a LS/Vtec Turbo project; that might be next.

well i hope u know an lsvtec would own both those projects

I know...I just dont want to get into to much on my college budget

if its turbo and you arent gonna build the motor, ls/vtec isnt really gonna help you very much, both the b16a or the b18a will be fine turbo motors, i personally would go with a b18, but if the b16 is already in the car keep it.

then do the 1.8, faster spool and more torque, b16 will give you more lag but more top end hp.

use lsvtec dowel pins if u suck at drilling
gsr headbolts
vtec oilpump
buy an oilline kit just incase and ur done
should cost 120 bucks and u will have vtec and a lowcomp block best of both worlds

use the b16 if u can get the vtec controller, so u can take care of lag if u use a larger turbo

yes..go vtec. Since you are going to build the motor up it will be less pain. O and about turboing a nonvtec better than a vtec if wishy washy. First its the compression. People who have a C5 versus a Ls will turbo the ls because of its lower compression. Thats about it. But u can make the right #s with vtec or non depending on your turbo combination ya know. What kinda turbo you gonna run? Gt, T25, T3/T4 .....?

The reason I don’t want to do a LS/Vtec is I am afraid it will end up like the H22 I was going to put in my CRX. So I was going to do a simple turbo then maybe later add to it. I think I might use the B18 then later if I get some more $$$ and time swap the vtec head on it and see what I can do from there.

if your going to turbo THERES NO f**king POINT TO HAVING VTEC. a regular ls can make 250+ whp just like any vtec motor, the only thing adding a vtec head will do is add the chance of unreliability, and when you increase revs, you put more stress on the motor than it needs, especially when boosted. keep the ls, boost that.

wow this post is from a while ago, I am in the process of gathering parts for my turbo b16....I just cant live without the redline
