B16A Overheating Problem

Hi all,
I have an overheating problem with my B16A. the overheating only happened during idling in a massive jam. when I drive for long journey, it does not happen. I have checked the followings :

1. no boiling water on spare compartment when overheating or filled up 100% compartment
2. no sign of milky stain on engine oil cap
3. no white smoke
4. water level still same and no sign of reduced amount of water
5. took out the thermostat and problem still same..so thermostat was not the problem
6. water pump still very new
7. no sign of blown top head gasket
8. radiator cap still ok
9. radiator tank - double layer type

the only suspicious I have is the radiator tank..which could have been blocked as everytime I change out my radiator water, I can see rusty water coming out. I had this problem before but after servicing the radiator, it was ok for 6 months or so.

I believe the rusty water was due to bad engine block..i bought this engine from Japan (used). no matter how many times I clean my radiator, the flowing water out on the next service still will be rusty.

I have no overheating problem when travelling for 200 + KM at 140km/h to 180km/h speed.

also, one of my mechanic told me that VTEC engine must use the thermostat. is that true or is it good without thermostat?

Pls assist

Try to check the fan switch or whatever they have called it now. Its possible thats why its overheating. Happened to me and I ended up blowing the headgasket.

As stated above, I would check the fan switch. You didn't state at all in your post if the fan works for sure. Check that and report back.

As for your mechanic mentioning you must using the thermostat for VTEC to work, it depends. VTEC requires a certain temperature to engage, if it does not reach that temp then it will not engage. I replaced my stock thermostat with an aftermarket one to open earlier to decrease temps sooner and my VTEC still works great.

Thanks civHatch92. forgot to mention that when the overheat happened, the fan was working. it was also working when I test run the engine in idle.
if the corrosion inside engine is bad, how often should I wash out/service my radiator tank?
