b20 w/ boost questions

so i've made my final decision, which is to swap out my y8 for a b20 and boost it instead of just boosting my single cam. so i have a couple quick questions...

1. what ecu would be best? still convert to obd1?
2. best tranny option for a boosted b20? should i just go with the b20 tranny?

thanks.

i say yes 2 obd1 n gsr tranny
same as what i was thinking, just wasnt sure of the complatiblity. i'm just now starting to learn about b20 motors, and so far i like what i hear. the stock numbers seem perfect for boost lol. one more question, should i go vtec or not? i was told not to on the b20 if i plan on boost..

are you planning to sleeve the block? b/c b20's are NOT bread for boost.. you might get away with a lower boost setup if you have a really good tune and dont cut any corners. i'm not saying it cant be done, i just dont recommend it. but if you are serious about making power on a stock motor with boost you need a 1.8L block, b/c a b20 is simply a bored out b18

putting a vtec head on a b20 is relatively simple and pretty common. i had a b20vtec N/A for about a year. pulled strong til the HG popped :(. you can expect anywhere from 15-30hp from swapping the head, but remember that b20 internals werent designed for 8k+ rpms

the best fuel management system for a custom setup like that is a fully programmable ecu. a piggyback is definitely a no-no, and you dont have a lot of flexibility with a chipped ecu once its done. with a programmable you can always update the tune for modifications down the road

any b-series hydro tranny should bolt up. a GSR would be fine... it all just depends on what gear ratios you want; if you do more highway or city, gas mileage goals, etc

B16 for short quicker gears; B18c for longer gears..

I had a B16a2 tranny with a OBD1 P06/S100 in my boosted b20z.

have any dyno numbers for that setup? and did you run into any problems?
Yea I had a dyno sheet hardcopy a few years back... Not all that really high though, only made around 230-235whp at 9-10psi. No problems, je low comp pistons and eagle rods.

off topic: wouldnt longer gears be better for boost??
Depends what kind of driving/racing your doing... I had rediculously short gears, but it gave me an edge racing from a dig... I would say its great for autox too, but i've never experienced that with the crx sooo yea...

Also off topic; yes longer gears IMO r better for BOOST, although if the car was gonna see quite a bit of track time the b16 one would be great for 1/4 mile! I'm going with a gsr tranny for the longer gears for those highway roadtrips lol but there still geared good enough for 1/4 mile! Its preferance really!

With a b16 tranny bolted up to my b20, I was at the top of 4th gear on a 1/4 mile run. Highways... I think I was cruising 60mph on 2900-3000rpm... Not bad...

O b16s aren't bad at all I'm just choosing the gsr this time cuz I like the longer gears and I like longer gears for boost but either is fine just think one (b16) like u said is better from a dig-1/4 mile and yes autocross except my buddy used his 2000 si for autocross and his was lightly modded for autocross and when VTEC engaged tires would start spinning! So idk!

If you want rediculously long gears that wouldnt do s**t for you.. Go for a LS tranny ;P

True that, with the LS gears but I suppose if u got the right build it would be ok but not my cup of tea that's y I chose the gsr not too short and not too long lol!

like u i'm sorta doing the same. pulling the D15 and dropping in a B20. toneekays ecu plan works IMO. and i think thats what i'm gonna go with is hondata, not sure wat ecu i want.

as for trannys go yeah, a B16 tranny would work as well as a GSR or LS. long gears do work better for boost since it gives you longer time to build the boost. i think for my set up it was a LS for long gears and a GSR for more agressive choice.

Also like mugenkid said, you might wanna build the internals. the B20b's at exactly happy going past 6000rpm. they can take some boost and from what reasearch i've seen up to 9 and even 10psi but when you cross over 8 its good to have alil bit of build. i know i'm going with forged connecting rods and forged valve spring and retainers. but thats about it. i only plan to go no past 10 psi though.

EDIT: as for the vtec, you can but be careful. head conversions on a b20 for some odd reason leak so i recommend getting a Golden Eagle vtec conversion kit so you dont have to tap the block (which is where most leaks are in CR-VTEC) you'll have to tap the head but hey its better than having 2 potential leaks.

i'll most likely just go non-vtec, but yeah this helps me out a lot. as for ecu...p28? and i'm not planning on getting on it too often at all, so 6000 rpm won't be a regular thing. like i said, this is just my daily driver so i'm not trying to push some crazy psi. maybe 8 to 9 psi at most.

I'm planning to boost 13-15 psi with ARP headstuds, cometic metal headgasket, eagle h-beam rods, golden eagle block guard, new oem piston rings, new oem bearings, and I'm shooting for 300-350whp I'm more then likely gonna acheive that power at a lower psi but we will see!
