Battery leaking sulfuric fumes...?

So i have an em1 and recently i swapped in a single cam from a 98 ex just until my motor is done at the shop. There is a part of the harness that bolts up to the alternator which seems to be a ground wire and it hooks up on the alternator where theres a nut and bolt with a big rubber piece at the bottom of it....well anyways that nuts and bolt snapped off so i never attached that wire which in guessing is the ground. Since then my power would go down as my rpms decreased and would raise with raise of rpms.

Now my battery is leaking fumes which are sulfuric since i can smell that ass smell and i see them coming out. Is this because that wire is not hooked up my alternator is not getting fully grounded and is overcharging my system? IF this is the case could i just hook that wire up to another part of the alternator so i can ground it out? I just got a new battery a couple days ago and they said its leakproof...does this mean mine isnt leak proof since its leaking fumes? Thank you and if anyone really needs pictures i could show them what im talking about....

Check all your connections, that wire is there for a reason. Don't just assume you can go without it.
