blinker/hazards problem!

searched but no luck...
i have a 2000 civic just for reference, and did a self install of my car alarm a few months ago. i know everything works perfectly fine on my alarm so thats not the issue.

but now i noticed that when i hit the hazards on only my right side blinker flashes, even though on the cluster it flashes both sides. also when i use my right or left turn signal the dash flash works sometimes and not even though the outside bulbs work fine.

i checked the fuses for both hazard and turn signals and seem to be fine. the weird thing is when i checked the fuse under the dash, i cleaned off the metal prong, stuck it back in and everything worked fine.... but that's not the end of it. after like 10 seconds of testing it went back to how it was before.

now when i installed my alarm, i might have tampered with something relating to the hazard without knowing, i know i know, i'm stupid for not knowing but if anybody can point me in the right direction that'll be great. i have an inspection i need to do this month! arrrgg!

btw i found this on another similar thread where NOFX responded

If it's not the fuse, you might have a bad combo switch. Sorry to say... that sucks for you. Not a big deal, just not really cheap.
if youre reading this NOFX would you mind explaining what that is/where its located?

The combination switch (aka combo switch) is the switch containing your turn signals, wipers, headlights, etc. It's not a cheap piece and generally a pain in the ass to replace since you have to pull the wheel and such. It's the black part behinf the wheel with the two long stick-shaped knobs sticking out. When removed it looks like a round circle with the two sticks sticking out of it. It fits around the steering column.

I don't think that'd be yor problem though since it's still activating the lights on the dash. Meaning the signal is working there. Maybe it's your flasher unit? When there's trouble with the flasher unit it can do all sorts of wierd things relating to the turn signals and emergency flashers.

I have no idea where that is on a Civic though. Sorry. The flasher is basically a little black box though that costs about $3 from an autoparts store. It will be in with the fuses in the store.

phew... that's a relief the combo switch isnt a problem. i have a service manual so i'll look for the flasher unit. this unit basically looks like a relay switch right?

i did some more research and found out that corrosion might be affecting this, so i'll have that checked out too

Yeah, it looks a lot like a relay. It's usually a little black box.

quick status update:
i did locate and figured out that the flasher unit has a loose connection with the fuse block that its plugged into, i wiggled it around and it seemed to be the problem so i'll figure how to tighten it.

just wanted to say thanks again to NOFX for the help! i dont know how much i woulda spent to have it fixed if i was that desperate to get it done before the inspection!
