Which is better bang for the buck? An EX with a good turbo kit, or a DX with Type-R swap?

I'm getting the base car this week, and am just trying to figure out which one to get. =)

let's see...

WEIGHT
- 97 dx curb weight: 2271 lbs.
- 97 ex curb weight: 2460 lbs.
- 189 lbs. difference.
- btw, 99-00's weigh a bit more than 96-98's.

TURBO D16
- a boosted d16 can make 178 whp 148 ft-lbs @ 7psi (0.46bar)with the edelbrock kit (costs $3,000)
- more could be made at the same psi with proper tuning, fuel management, etc.
- a custom turbo could cost you no more than $1000.

ITR SWAP
- stock JDM b18c5 costs about $4,500 and makes 210hp 134 lb-ft. this is before drivetrain lossess.
- stock USDM b18c5 makes 195hp. not sure of price, but a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the JDM motor.

....

however, what exactly are we comparing... the costs for these choices aren't even remotely close to each other... but whatever. if i were u, i'd boost the SOHC.

Type R all the way. Then later when you have some money buy a turbo. That wil be a fast car then.

Guess I should have mentioned those figures because it appears that, around here, EX Coupes run about $2k more than DX Coupes for the same year.

So my dilemma is rather to pay the $2k up front and get an EX, or save the $2k and put it towards the cost of an ITR swap. Figuring that, if I got the EX and boosted it, it would cost about the same as doing the DX w/ITR swap.

I'd prefer to get in cheaper, but don't want to be disappointed or limited in performance mods down the road because of my choice.

TIA

I would go with a custom turbo kit. You can build the bottom end and boost it and get way more power out of it than the type r. Say you can build and boost for 5k. You will be boosting say 10-12psi thats well over 200whp and a type r motor cost around 5k when its installed. But its your money but I would go boost.

boost it, yeah type r is nice as hell but there getting harder and harder to find, so unless you plan to do this in a couple of months you might have a hard time finding a good engine that hasnt been run into the ground, now for about the same amount of mney as the type r you could boost the D16 and then bulid up the block and run a good fuel management.

Good points all - thanks for the input!

I think I'm going to go the EX route - then at least I'll have a decent car until I get the cash together for the turbo. How much boost/HP can I reliably get out of the EX if I strenghten the internals? This will be a daily driver, so reliability is key.

Thanks again!

with proper tuning, knowledge, and precaution it can be as reliable as stock. maximum boost and gains will depend on the turbo u get... the greddy 15g (comes with 92-95 kit) maxes out at about 1bar (15psi).

cool - how much hp (ballpark) will that crank out on the EX engine?

depends how much you boost.
depends what turbo you use.
depends on the tuning.
and other variables.

I realize it depends on a ton of things, but will a strengthened EX block handle, say 250hp? Or at that point would I have to go to something else? (Assuming all the necessary work is done, and done right.)

a strengthened block can handle over 300whp.
a stock block could possibly do 200whp with proper tuning and fuel management
