bov "echo"

i went to nopi nat'ls in atlanta, there was a r32 skyline in the drift competition that had THE coolest-sounding engine i think i've ever heard. he was obviously pushing some serious boost #'s, and the sound that made it sound so bad-ass was the blow-off valve, it made a kind of echo or stutter, i don't really know how to describe it.
it sounded kinda like WWAAAAAAHHHH (engine revving) PSSST shi shi shi shi (BOV sound) anyway he was sitting in the pits when he revved it like that and it was like a wave, everybody 20 yards from him turned their heads to see what was making that bad-ass sound. i was just wondering, what causes that? is it just the massive pressures built up in the intake from the huge turbo? like the bov can't get rid of that much pressure all at once? i'd like to be able to get that kinda sound once i turbo my civic, but i figure thats something you have to have an rb20det running 30+lb. boost to get, so maybe its out of the question. i can always dream though right?

I think that any bov will do that if your running enough boost, and since the r32 was on a track at a comp those types of places have a lot of echo. The bov was just really loud and your heard the shh shh shh echo sound.

get a turbo first....and trust me, you'll get sick of it....I know of at least two people (one with a 94 supra, and one with a hatch) that got loud ass bov's and had to buy diff. ones because they were freakin annoying...

It's called a sequential b.o.v and this has been asked before and I have answered this before.
Watch Fast and the Furious again and listen to the Supra as it pulls up to the Charger in the last race...

that's the sound you're referring to.

Skylines GT-R's have the RB26DETT not RB20's.....

THe GT-S models have the RB25DET

As for the sound.....I know that Mazdaspeed Protege does that. at least after my freind put the Turbo XS RFL on....We found out that it was consistant pressure releif this way the intake plenum pressure just dosent drop from 20psi to 8psi for example, instantly and starve the engine as rpms drop. This way there is gradual pressure. Im not sure how to set that. Im sure it would have to have a boost controller for that. I dont remember if he had one or not.

the newer r34 skylines have rb26dett's, this was an older r32 gt-s. wait... crap. you're right. rb25det, not rb20det, sorry my bad. unfortunately i'm not as tech-savvy as i should be on my nissan engines.

Im guessin' none of you have heard a Large turbo-charged engine. The continuing sound you're talkin' about is nothin' more than the turbo itself. Its a lot harder to hear with small turbos. If you could get a cummings turbo deisel to rev high enough (and make the rest of the truck more quiet) you'd hear it in those big trucks too.

what do you mean? that movie is like my no. 1 reference when it comes to realistic cars and terms explaining ideas that give lots of insight into the import scene. isnt everything in that movie realistic? wait you don't shoot forward like that when u punch the nawz?

I have heard of a bov that makes a similar sound. I can't remember what they were calling it (a friend of a friend has one), but I don't think it's been mentioned on this page yet. :???:

I'll ask next time I see him. I can't promise he'll remember the conversation though. I just overheard my friend and another guy talking about the car, I wasn't in the conversation really. I'll talk to him later though. =)

it doesnt have to push that much boost to make that noise...i have a friend with a show integra only pushing 9psi of boost that makes that noise even louder than that....its a blitz BOV, a lot of other ones make that noise too, i think waste-gate has alil to do with it to, but it just depends on what bov and how hard of a spring u have in there

that's his integra when i did a photoshoot for him, it runs a greddy turbo witha blitz BOV and makes that sound ur talkin about...i call that noise turbo chatter, lol but that echo noise ur talkin about really just depends on the BOV, cuz i have another friend with a greddy turbo higher psi with a greddy type s BOV and it makes like a high pitch PTCHIOOOOO kinda sound...but newayz, hope that helps u out

Laugh all you want... but guess what... the sound of a sequential b.o.v is legit no matter where you hear it... F&F or on the streets or in a vid... doesn't matter.

I've noticed a lot of turbo cars do this. They only stutter when the engine is not full reved up, hence, the turbo not fully being spooled up, therefore, very little is traveling through the BOV.
