Brake Booster Check Valve

So this may sound like a crazy question, but is it possible that a brake booster can still function without a Check Valve in the hose? I ask this because I'm having the problem where i step on the break and idle goes down and was following the steps to diagnosis a bad brake booster or leak. And when I got to the step to disconnect the hose that went from the brake booster to the check valve I see no check valve whats so ever? So unless I'm crazy stupid and just cannot see the check valve, is it possible for it to still function without the check valve there? Its a 2000 civic EX 2 door D16Y8.

As I remember, the check valve is built into the hose.
