u can try getting a volt-meter if you think it might be somewhere in the wiring...i think it'll run u like 20 bucks or something...then u can check to see if there is current going into certain areas...maybe help u narrow down the source of the problem?

Did you check both filaments in the bulb? i think for the tail lights there is a dual filament. Otherwise, not too sure....u got a strange problem there...haha

sounds like one filament is out. take the bulb out, put it in one of the other brake light sockets and see if it works

Do you mean that the taillights light, but the brake light will only light when your headlights are on?

All you did was paint your tail lights right? Meaning, you just un-bolted the necessary bolts, twisted off the bulbs, and then painted right? After you got done painting, you put your tail lights back on, in the reverse order? As stated above try swapping out your bulbs. If that fails... How did you check your fuses? Pulled them out and eye balled them? Or did you have that mini-fuse test light thing? If you have, or can get access to a digital multi meter, that would be perfect.

--- Even though your fuse LOOKS to be good, that doesnt necessarily mean it is. Best way to check is with a DMM ---
