Can bad distributor timing cause engine to die at idle (no throttle)

I am about to go buy a timing gun and set my timing on my distributor. I just rebuilt the engine (d16y8). I cranked the engine over last night and got it to run with a bit of throttle. Without throttle it proceeds to lose rpm until it dies. Can this be a problem from the distrubtor timing or would this probably be something else? Just curious because I want to know if i need to get anything else or check something else as well

Was the head decked? Block decked? Anytime you put a motor together you should ALWAYS set proper timing, a timimg light is always a good tool to have.

Ok so heres the update. My buddy is a mechanic and he is stumped too. I bought a timing gun and we set the timing to near perfect. but my IAC valve is not getting enough volts to actuate. it is getting 10v instead of 12v. I had my head checked to see if it needed decked and it did not. i have new seals and valve guides and they all pass vac check. its something with my ecu maybe the wire is going bad or there is something that needs to be fixed with the fuses or something? any ideas are appreciated.

What's near perfect timing? Any cel's?

Near perfect as in the timing mark is in the middle line of the crank pulley. I did not get any CELs even when i tried to short the ecu. I think I might try to redo the timing later after I figure out the IACV. That is what is holding me up. I cannot run the engine without being in the car and holding the throttle. That kind of makes it hard to work on with timing and stuff. So for now my focus is figuring out how I can get power to the valve when its running. we tested the connection to the valve with 12v and it comlpeted the circuit back thru the ground to the ecu. So it seems like I may just need to wire a constant 12v to the IACV (constant when running and when cranking)

Do you happen to know where i can wire to that will supply 12v when the ignition key is at on as well as start?

Use a test light on the fuse block under the dash, mine had some posts that are 12+ keyed, if not check the actual fuses and put a tap on 1 of those.
