i have a pioneer headunit that puts outs out 22 watts rms x4 in a 94 dx hatch. since the car only has two front door speakers, i have the rear speakers leads off the head unit taped off and the fader set to just front.

i was going through my basement and came across an old 6" single speaker tube sub with one positive and negative speaker connection. i used this before with a 30 watt amp and they sounded decent. can i wire both pairs of unused rear speaker leads off the head unit to this speaker or am i going to put too low of an impedance on the head unit amp and mess it up?

i don't think that's a good idea. you're basically bridging the 2 rear outputs on the head unit and i'm sure it wasn't made to handle that. just get an external amp and use the preamps off the headunit. or connect the sub to just one of the rear outputs and another 4 ohm speaker to the other. you'll only get 22 watts rms to the sub that way but if you said it worked fine at 30, it may still be ok. i'm no car audio expert but that's my take on it.

22x4? are you sure?
That is probably the max wattage output that they put on the CD player...they dont put out any more than 12-14 watts per channel, if you're lucky.
