Car turns off upon startup???

hey guys, my car has been a huge project since day 1, and i love it! there's so much to fix and learn and it's just tons of fun.

anyway, i've run into a slight issue. on startup, the ignition will turn for awhile before actually turning over. if it doesn't stall out, it starts humming at very low RPM and sputters, usually to a stall. once i start it up again, it may repeat, or be fine for the rest of the day. i've kind of been able to avoid this by shifting to neutral and giving it little shots of gas, but i don't like that it's happening in the first place.

My questions for you all are, what could this be? how can i fix it? has anyone else run into this issue?

i've replaced a number of things on the car, and it didn't start happening immediately after any of them, it just gradually got worse and worse.

What in all have you replaced already?

so far, i've done the catback exhaust, the valve cover gasket, distributor o-ring, timing belt and water pumper were done, i did the oil pan gasket, changed the battery, replaced the spark plugs, and put on an aftermarket air intake. everything has been done between late september and monday(5/27/13).

just did the fuel pump today. works perfectly now!!
