Car won't start intermittently

Hi guys I have a 1992 eg civic b16a2.

My issue is that the car won't start occasionally after I have driven it even for a long drive. The car will start fine and drive ok then when I stop to get petrol and turn it off and come back to it it won't start. Has happened 3 times in the past few months. The first time the car started then died twice then the battery went flat and wouldn't start till jumped. The second time it wouldn't even start. I don't daily the car which makes me suspect the battery is done but I don't understand why it would start and drive ok initially. I have checked the voltage with the car running and am getting 14v at the battery so the alternator is charging ok. Which also puzzles me why it dies after being knocked off after a drive as the battery should be charging. Every time this happens the car starts fine when being jump started.

I'm fitting a new battery this weekend as the battery in it looks old as is. Any advice what to check next?

On older Hondas are known to get bad relays and not start or crank at times. I'd also look into that.

I was just about to ask... Do you hear the fuel pump prime everytime you turn the key on?
