Catbacks + Torque

I got a catback system on Ebay but I'm hesitant to put it on. Its 2.5 inch piping. I read an article about 2 days after I ordered it that it will decrease torque unless I have a supercharger or turbo. I was wondering if anyone has done dyno any testing on a 96-00 civic. I'm an autocrosser so I need my torque.

you might lose some low-end torque but chances are you will either not change or you will gain

a 2.5" is way too large for a d series, and you will see loss of power all across the rev range, possibly a small gain at redline only. a 2" is a better choice.

Damn, I had a tough time finding a reasonably priced 2" piping catback. I didn't want to spend like $550 for a Greddy when the actual wheel HP/Torque gains are so low anyway. I could use the catback with some kind of forced induction but that puts me into a street prepared class in autocross with like....Turbo BMWs and Integras. I'd get slaughtered. <shudder>

2.5" catback system for sale. Full stainless steel mandrel bent piping. 4" exhaust tip with removable silencer. $250.

I also have a header and a CAI. Would that make a difference?

In Washington DC we have two that sorta work together. SCCA and WDCR. I'm an SCCA member but I compete in events by both oganizations. Right now I'm running in STS (the extreme ricer class)

There are also a ton of other local clubs who design the courses. The purposfully design it to give their club an advantage. The Mini club makes courses with all turns and skid pads and stuff. The Vette clubs make courses with long straights.

dyno

Here is an article from Import Tuner featuring a 1996 Civic EX. The put on a catback and got 2.7 HP and 0.9p torque out of it. The unit was like $450. (What a rip)

Anyway, I looked and looked but I dont know if that system is 2.5 or 2.0 inch. Even the damn Thermal R&D website doesn't say!!! If the diameter is so important, why does hardly anyone list it? Am I to magically know?

IMO it's a huge waste of money to buy catback exhausts such as greddy, skunk2, etc

just buy a nice muffler and get a muffler shop to custom bend catback piping for ya and handlebars is right, I didn't notice you said 2.5". That's too big for your little engine, read up on some of the exhaust system threads.

Problem is I already have it. I didn't even want it but it was a really good deal brand new from a friend of a friend and I had some extra cash. I didn't even think about the diameter.

Even if it gives me 1/2 lb of torque I'd put it on. I just don't want it to decrease peformance. It also has a silencer which closes 4 inch tip to about 2 inches. Every independant dyno I've seen with the D16Y8 shows the catback delivering small performance gains. (not all of them I was able to find the pipe size). For exmaple, the one I showed you, I found out was a 2.5 inch piping and actually designed for turbo/superchared...delived 3 hp almost and almost 1 lb torque on D16.
