After beating a jeep in a race I went on to my house then next morning my check engine light was on and I noticed that my speedometer was not working but after driving for a while it'll start to move then it goes crazy up n down from 0 to 100 and more .... so I'm guessing that's why my check engine light is on but I don't know what to do . Is it a sensor that maybe is going bad or what please help I've never had to mess with this its new to me . So where do I start is it my speedo cable or sensor or something else any help and advise is welcome thanks for any help oh its a 97 civic ex 1.6 vtec sohc

Stop racing people in an economy car. It's not "fast". The word for it is reckless endangerment. If you want to race go to the track and stop putting innocent lives in danger so you can push your econobox to the limit.

Go to a local parts store like auto zone and have them check the code. Sounds like your VSS sensor may be bad, but have the code checked to be certain.

Wow yeah thanks for the advice had that planned already but as for racing I'll let ya know how it goes on endangering other lives when we were on a closed road just as if we were at the track but I bet you don't ever race for the thrill or the fun but thanks again for your racing advice in one ear and out the other lol I'll go to track next time with the lil civic that could

Everyone is on "closed roads".. right. Closed road or not, it is illegal. Figure if a road is "closed", you shouldnt be on it in the first place.....

Dont you know that you have to check the engine after every race? That light is your car reminding you to do that.

Check your VSS.
