check engine

So iv been driving with my check engine light on for probably a good 4k miles.....the guy at the shop says that it said something was wrong with the gas tank and the only way to find out was to take it all apart..... Also every so often the car will chug once, the light will flash off and back on and it will drive fine. i think it might be somethin with a lack of gas thats why it cuts out for a second but im not sure. Anyone have an idea?

Pull the CEL codes. Then reset the ECU to see whether any of the codes return.
