Civic exhaust makes a hissing sound

My 1996 Honda Civic VTi started making a sort of hissing sound from the exhaust a few moths ago.
It is fine at idle but very noticeable under load.
This car is in New Zealand & I'm pretty sure it does not have a catalytic converter.
I thought perhaps something in the exhaust system has broken / partially blocked the exhaust.
What ever it is, I think it has affected the cars top speed, it seems to struggle to get to 140 kph.
It may also be affecting fuel economy.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Any CEL? Where in the exhaust? from the tailpipe, along the piping, or at the exhaust manifold?
Can you take a photo of the exhaust manifold?

that would be called a exhaust leak, you have a crack, or bad exhaust gasket somewhere.

if its hissing, you have a leak, exhaust doesnt magically make hissing noises, unbolt the whole thing, pull it down, and check it. there is a crack somewhere, or a rust hole.
